Yesterday I delivered two fire safety training sessions in South London.

The first was at a substantial residential care home and the second at a Hindu temple. In both sessions, the content was tailored to the specific risks, responsibilities and day-to-day activities of each organisation, ensuring the training was relevant, practical and engaging.

Alongside workplace fire safety topics, there was a strong emphasis on home fire safety, including the importance of smoke alarm ownership, testing and maintenance, as well as raising awareness of Home Safety Visits and the support available to help people stay safe in their homes.

The sessions generated good discussion and provided an opportunity to reinforce the message that fire safety is not only a workplace responsibility but also an important part of protecting ourselves, our families and our communities.

This is a subject I regularly discuss on training courses. Many people are simply unaware that registering electrical products can be important for receiving safety recalls and updates. A short educational conversation can significantly improve understanding and, in turn, help protect people, property and families from avoidable risks.

With the warmer weather on its way ☀️, people may start to move outside for a barbecue 🍔🌭.

By following the Fire Kills campaign’s top tips, you can ensure your barbecue is a safe, enjoyable event.

• 🔥 Never leave a lit barbecue unattended.

• 📄 Follow the safety instructions provided with disposable barbecues.

• 🚫 Never use a barbecue indoors.

• 🏡 Make sure your barbecue is well away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs or garden waste.

• 👶🐾 Keep children, pets and garden games away from the cooking area.

• ❄️ After cooking, make sure the barbecue is cool before moving it.

• ⚖️ Use enough charcoal to cover the base of the barbecue, but not more.

• 🗑️ Allow ashes to fully cool before disposing of them. Do not put hot ashes into dustbins or wheelie bins as they can melt the plastic and start a fire.

• 😊 Enjoy yourself but stay in control if you’re in charge of the barbecue. • 🚿 Always keep a bucket of water, or a garden hose nearby for emergencies.
