🔥 Fire Safety Training That Reflects the Reality of Care 🔥

Today I delivered another bespoke fire safety programme at a substantial residential care home in Bexhill, with delegates attending from both the residential and nursing home settings.

This course was developed specifically for the care environment — because effective fire safety training cannot simply be a tick-box exercise.

Staff need to understand not only what they are expected to do, but why it matters, what their individual responsibilities are, and how they may need to respond when faced with a real fire emergency.

The course covered:

🧯 Fire prevention — recognising hazards and reducing the likelihood of fire.

🚨 Roles and responsibilities — understanding exactly what is expected of staff before, during and after an incident.

🏠 Fire safety in care environments — considering the additional challenges associated with protecting and evacuating vulnerable residents.

👥 Emergency response and evacuation — developing confidence in making appropriate decisions under pressure.

⚠️ Workplace health and safety — reinforcing the wider responsibilities that contribute to a safe environment.

With more than 26 years of Fire & Rescue Service experience, much of it spent working in training, I believe strongly that good training should go beyond simply delivering information.

It should challenge, engage and prepare people for what they may actually face.

That is why I take a bespoke approach to training — adapting the content to the building, people, risks and operational realities of each organisation.

The feedback and engagement from today’s delegates were excellent, and it was particularly encouraging to see staff from both care settings actively participating and developing their understanding.

Fire safety isn’t just about legislation, policies and procedures.

It’s about giving people the knowledge, skills and confidence to protect others when it matters most.

☀️ Plug-in solar panels – convenient, but are they suitable for your home?

Sharing this because I think it’s an important reminder that “plug-in” doesn’t necessarily mean “plug-and-play”.

As plug-in solar systems become more readily available in the UK, it’s tempting to see them as a simple way of reducing energy bills. But there are important electrical safety considerations that need to be understood before installing one.

Your existing electrical installation, RCD protection and the way the system connects to your home’s supply all need to be suitable. In some circumstances, your installation may need upgrading before a plug-in solar system can be safely used.

Don’t simply buy one and plug it in. If you’re considering plug-in solar, do your research and seek advice from a suitably qualified electrician if you’re unsure.

A relatively small amount of professional advice beforehand could prevent a much bigger problem later.

Safety should always come before saving a few pounds on your energy bill.

🔥 Fire Safety Training – Eastbourne

Today I delivered two fire training sessions at a substantial residential care home in Eastbourne.

The focus was on ensuring those responsible for overseeing and coordinating a fire situation understand their role and are equipped with the knowledge to carry it out safely and effectively.

We recapped key areas including fire awareness, evacuation procedures and the safe use of fire extinguishers, as well as looking at the role and responsibilities of a Fire Warden during an emergency.

There was also a strong focus on prevention — recognising fire risks and understanding the preventative actions that can be taken to reduce those risks before an incident occurs.

We discussed issues relevant both in the workplace and at home, including the safe charging of electrical equipment and the correct disposal of batteries.

Fire safety isn’t simply about responding when something goes wrong — it’s about recognising risks, preventing incidents and being prepared to make the right decisions when it matters.

🔥 Practical Fire Safety Training — Real Experience Matters

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of delivering practical fire safety training for a long-standing customer I’ve worked with for over 20 years.

This annual event provides an opportunity to train a large number of staff from a wide range of disciplines across the site, with everyone encouraged to get involved and gain genuine hands-on experience.

Plenty of equipment is provided, and every delegate had the opportunity to use fire extinguishers on real fires, with the optional use of a fire blanket.

There’s a huge difference between simply being shown how an extinguisher works and actually using one on a real fire. Experiencing the heat and seeing first-hand the limitations of fire extinguishers gives delegates a valuable appreciation of their practical use.

Yesterday, just under 100 members of staff took part — and every single person gained hands-on experience. 🔥

I always encourage the customer to make the most of this annual practical training opportunity by booking the maximum number of staff possible. It’s something we’ve developed together over many years, and our excellent working relationship continues to make these events such a success.

🔥 Students heading off to university? Fire safety is worth talking about before they move in.

I was previously part of the fire safety team at a local university, so I’ve seen first-hand how important fire safety is in student accommodation.

There are some simple messages that I continue to cover on my fire safety courses, including advice that is particularly relevant for parents of students:

🍳 Stay in the kitchen when cooking — particularly when frying, grilling or using the hob.

🔥 Keep anything combustible away from cooking appliances — tea towels, packaging, oven gloves and other items can catch fire surprisingly easily.

🔋 Take lithium-ion battery safety seriously — use the correct charger, don’t use damaged equipment and avoid charging devices overnight or when you’re asleep.

🚪 Keep escape routes and exits clear — never obstruct communal corridors, doors or escape routes with bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters or charging equipment.

🚨 Know what to do if the alarm sounds — get out, stay out and follow the building’s fire safety arrangements.

For parents, it’s worth having this conversation before your son or daughter heads off to university. Fire safety can easily be overlooked when they’re thinking about everything else that comes with moving away from home.

The advice may seem simple, but these are exactly the sorts of everyday behaviours that can make a significant difference.

Move-in season is here and with every college student returning to a dorm or on/off-campus housing, the fire risk in campus housing goes up.

That's why NFPA and The Center for Campus Fire Safety observe Campus Fire Safety Month every September, focusing this year on two of the biggest risks in student residences: safe cooking practices and lithium-ion battery safety.

If you're sending a student off to college this fall, a few tips worth leaving them with:
🔥 Stay in the kitchen when frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling. Turn off the burner if you leave.
🔥Keep flammable items (oven mitts, towels, food packaging) away from the stovetop.
🔥Charge lithium-ion devices only with the equipment they came with. Don't charge overnight or with damaged chargers.
🔥Never block an exit with charging devices, e-bikes, or e-scooters.

Fire sprinkler systems remain the last line of defense when prevention fails. Ask about the fire protection in your student's housing before move-in day!

Today’s training is taking place in a care home protected by an automatic sprinkler system.

Sprinklers are an excellent fire protection measure and can significantly reduce the growth of a fire, but they are just one part of a building’s fire safety strategy.

Compartmentation, fire doors, automatic fire detection, staff training, evacuation procedures and regular drills all play equally important roles in protecting residents, many of whom may need assistance to evacuate.

Fire safety is about layers of protection—not relying on a single system.
