Have you considered adding a 'live' element to your online course? It can change the pace, help people go deeper with their learning, and make the course more interesting.

This is what I do with my Productise Your Expertise programme. Each cohort (group) has access to a set of modules which take them through what they need to learn, but we also have live sessions to discuss progress, support one another and ask questions. The live elements add substantial value to the programme, and I love doing them. They also give me valuable information about where people get stuck, anything I haven't explained clearly enough or where I need to develop further learning materials for people to go deep when they want to.

You can add in all kinds of different formats for the live elements within your own online course. Here are some examples to consider:
• Workshops where you teach more on a certain point
• Work-along sessions where people show up to report their progress
• Ask Me Anything sessions: Zoom meetings (which can run all day) where learners pop by with their questions
• Splitting the cohort into groups of two or three people and getting them to do an exercise together. You don't even need to be present for this one.

This is a comprehensive guide to getting started with productised services. It's a productised version of the kind of conversation I have with people all the time about how they can make productised services work specifically in their business.

It's very practical, setting out what you're going to include in your productised service offering. And what you need to exclude. It gives you the questions you need to ask yourself to get a clear focus on the way forward.

And it's packed full of ideas for how you can reduce all the fluff and frills (or transaction costs, as the MBA people call them). Plus, great tips for automating and standardising how you operate so that you can be hyper-efficient and therefore take on more clients.

Plus, it suggests the kind of resources you might make in advance to fully productise.

Download the Mission Guide to Productised Services and let me know what you've put into action as a result.

I encourage you to take a new look at what you do and recognise which parts of this might be called your magic or your superpowers.

At the moment, you see this as the standard tools of your trade, the experience of working with dozens of clients to refine your approach, but to the rest of us, it's magic because you've taken what you do to a new level.

If I'd known back then that I could use these modular development techniques for my products and that this would save me so much time and heartache. I do wish I had a time machine.

This is what I would do if I were starting again in 2024 and building a product-based business.

Plan your pivot to products the smart way using modular development

Is there a magic money machine? We'd all love one.

You can make your own magic money machine by creating products from your expertise. Every day, I get a little handful of emails from Stripe saying some money has popped into my account. Sometimes it's £13.99 from a template I built years ago, sometimes it's 1.5k from a programme I'll be running later in the year.

Making a magic money machine is a labour of love. It takes effort over a long period of time. Most people (most of your competitors, in fact) won't bother to make one. Which gives you a competitive edge.

Making a magic money machine from products takes two sorts of effort. You have to make the product in the first place, and you have to sell it over the long term.

There's nothing magic about it - there's a clear methodology for making products from your expertise, just follow the instructions, keep turning the handle and the machine will make money for you.

The type of digital products you sell should reflect who you are as a company and as a person.

Developing products is much easier if you build on your existing strengths first. When you're working out what should be the first product in your product ecosystem, it's much easier to build a product using your existing skillset. The learning curve for creating a book or a course can be pretty steep for most of us because we don't already have the skills we need to make the product.

And this makes the process much more fun – don't step too far outside your comfort zone.

There's nothing wrong with online courses. But…making an online course can be challenging. And it can take a long time. Often longer than you think. Most of us have to master new skills to make online courses.

Instead of starting your adventures in products with an online course, think about the following -

* A series of live delivery workshops
* A paid newsletter to build your audience and practice getting your knowledge out of your head and into your products
* A series of participatory learning sessions gives you invaluable customer feedback and practice
* A cohort-based membership programme with live drop-in learning sessions (aka office hours)
* A just-in-time course where you enrol a cohort and build the learning modules as you go along (warning - this one can be a roller coaster ride!)

One way of thinking differently about making online products is to think about making tool-based products. Here are some ideas:

* Reckoners - spreadsheets for complicated calculations
* Widgets - sell a widget that others can Whitelabel and put on their website (recurring licence income, anybody? Yes, please)
* Checklists for complex tasks or standard operating procedures
* Process maps - how to do something complex or make a complicated decision
