One of the biggest highlights of being a small business owner is the freedom and flexibility that comes with it.

The ability to shape your own schedule, build a business around your life, and create something that reflects your values is something I never take for granted.

If the process doesn’t work you can change it. Not run it through multiple departments!

As a self-employed Virtual Assistant, I love the variety that comes with supporting different businesses and the autonomy to work in a way that suits both me and my clients.

Of course, running a business comes with responsibility too, but for me, the freedom to build a career on my own terms makes it all worthwhile.

No two days are ever the same, and I genuinely enjoy helping small business owners behind the scenes so they can focus on the bigger picture.

One of the best things about being a small business owner is the sense of control and independence.

You choose the direction.
You choose how you work.
And you build something that fits around your life, not the other way round.

For me, becoming a Virtual Assistant meant taking years of admin and organisational experience and using those skills to support other small businesses.

I love the flexibility, the variety of work, and the relationships built with clients along the way.

Yes, self-employment has its challenges, but the ability to create a business that works for you is a pretty special thing.

What’s the biggest benefit of running your own business for you?

Small business owners often end up doing everything, client work, admin, emails, invoicing, social media and all the little jobs in between.

Before long, the line between work and personal life becomes blurred.

One of the best things you can do is start outsourcing the lower-impact tasks that quietly drain your time.

Using a Virtual Assistant or simple automation tools for repetitive admin tasks can free up time to focus on the bigger picture, business growth, strategy and the work only you can do.

Let a VA help your small business.

One thing people don’t always see about running a small business is the impact of delayed invoice payments.

You can be profitable on paper, work the hours, send the invoice… and still be left waiting to be paid.

Small businesses don’t have the same financial cushion as large companies, so delayed payments can create real pressure.

Unfortunately, it’s something I’ve experienced myself more than once.

Supporting small businesses isn’t just about buying from them, it’s also about paying invoices on time, leaving reviews, recommending services and understanding the reality behind self-employment.

Reading the stories from some traders at The Great British Farm-Fest who packed up early after not even covering their costs was really sad to see.

For many small businesses, events like these involve huge upfront costs, pitch fees, stock, fuel, accommodation, van hire and wages, all before a single sale is made.

But it’s also important to remember that this wasn’t everyone’s experience. Some traders did well, made great connections and had positive weekends too.

Running a small business can be unpredictable, and one difficult event doesn’t define the hard work, passion and resilience behind it.

Whether it’s buying from a local stall, booking with an independent business, leaving a review, sharing a post or recommending someone your support genuinely matters.

I know how easy it is for admin, emails, follow-ups and day-to-day tasks to quietly take over.

And when you’re running a small business, your time is valuable.

During UK Small Business Week, it’s a great reminder that supporting independents doesn’t always mean buying products, sometimes it’s recommending a service, sharing a post, booking a call, or simply telling someone about a business that’s helped you.

As a VA, I’m proud to support small businesses behind the scenes so owners can spend more time doing the work they actually enjoy and less time drowning in admin.

As a self-employed Virtual Assistant, I know just how much work goes into running a small business.

The long hours, the juggling act, the wearing of multiple hats… and often doing all of that quietly behind the scenes, whilst you tackle your clients work.

Small businesses really are the backbone of our communities, which we should not forget and this week is a lovely reminder to support them where we can.

So if you have a favourite local or independent business:

• Buy from them
• Recommend them
• Share their posts
• Leave a Google review
• Tell someone about what they do

And from one small business owner to another — thank you for every like, recommendation, referral and message of support along the way 🤍

Yes… I’m a fan of AI.

Not in a scary “it’s taking over” way — but in a very practical, everyday business sense.

For me, it’s like having a space for a proper "brain dump".

I can get all my thoughts out, and with the help of ChatGPT, it turns them into something structured, a draft, a checklist, or clear next steps.

I’ll often say “ask me questions” and it brings up things I hadn’t even considered.

It’s taken away those long, drawn-out documents and replaced them with clear, simple actions.

I use it for:
• Polishing emails
• Supporting project work
• Writing and structuring social media posts
• Breaking ideas down into manageable steps
• Even gym workout ideas

But here’s the important bit…

AI doesn’t replace the human element.

We still need to guide it, shape it, and decide what’s right. It’s a tool a very useful one but it still needs a human behind it.

Used well, it can save time, reduce overwhelm and bring a bit more clarity to a busy working day.

What have you been using AI for in your business or day-to-day life?

Back to running… again 🏃‍♀️

I’ll admit it — I’m definitely a fair-weather runner. Spring arrives, and so do my trainers.

But what I really love isn’t just the run… it’s the headspace

No emails. No notifications. Just time to think.

It’s funny how many ideas pop up when you step away —
💡 a better way to organise a spreadsheet
💡 a new post idea
💡 a small tweak to improve a process

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your business… is give your brain a bit of breathing room.

What’s your go-to for headspace?"

Drowning in Admin? This Might Be Your Answer

Running a business often means doing 'everything' yourself…
But it doesn’t have to.

A Virtual Assistant can take the pressure off — here’s how:

⏰ More time back
Inbox, diary, admin tasks handled → you focus on growth

💷 Flexible & cost-effective
No overheads, no long-term contracts — just pay for what you need

🧠 Less stress, more clarity
A clear desk = a clearer mind (and better decisions)

🤝 Reliable support
Someone organised, proactive, and on your side behind the scenes

If you’ve ever thought “I just need more hours in the day…”
…it might be time to get some support.
