Are biometric readers right for every job?

Not always. But in the right place, they can be a very strong option.

Biometric access control, such as fingerprint or facial recognition readers, can help tighten up security by making sure the person gaining access is actually the person authorised to be there.

No cards sharing. No lost fobs. No “I forgot my badge”. And less plastic credential waste over time.

Biometric Readers can be a good fit for higher-security areas like data centres, labs, healthcare environments, research spaces and other restricted areas where knowing exactly who entered really matters.

But there are things to think about before specifying them.

Biometric systems need proper planning, user enrolment, and careful handling of privacy and compliance requirements. Not every user will be comfortable with biometric data, and not every site environment is ideal for reliable scanning.

So, the real question is not “are biometric readers better?” It is “are they right for this site, this risk level, and this group of users?”

Managing who is travelling on company transport, site shuttles or organised trips can be difficult when there isn't a fixed access control hardware available.

MobileGuard brings GuardPoint10 directly onto the vehicle.

Using a vehicle-mounted Android tablet or compatible mobile device, passengers can present their RFID card, MobileKey or QR credential as they board. MobileGuard checks their details against GuardPoint10, helping staff confirm that the individual is authorised to travel while recording their check-in.

Each credential scan can update the user's location within GuardPoint10, providing a clear record of who has checked in and helping operators track passengers and monitor vehicle occupancy.

And because transport doesn't always have reliable connectivity, MobileGuard can download the system database for offline operation. If Wi-Fi or mobile data is lost, the app can continue operating and automatically synchronise with GuardPoint10 when the connection is restored.

Bit of behind-the-scenes work from our side.

Today we've been carrying out firmware updates on our IC500NX and IC1000NX series controllers to ensure compatibility with PAC readers. It’s not the flashiest thing to post about, but it’s the sort of work that matters on real jobs.

Not every site is a brand-new install with everything matching perfectly. Sometimes the job is about making the existing kit work with what’s already on site.

Some new kit from DOM just in.

We’ll be getting this lot configured for an upcoming GuardPoint10 installation, including DOM ENiQ Guard handles, Bridge and mesh hubs. Good option for cases where running cable is awkward or just not worth the hassle.

Our tech team is working on getting it set up, tested and talking to GP10 before it goes out to site.

We’re working on some exciting new developments for GuardPoint 10.

Our focus for 2026 is on three key areas: platform modernisation, stronger cybersecurity, and the development of new features driven by customer needs.

Some of the developments currently in progress include:

- Moving GP10 for windows to .NET 10 for improved performance, enhanced security and a supported platform for future development

- Developing a Linux version of GP10 to support growing demand in Asian markets and provide more choice for customers using Linux-based environments

- Ongoing security testing, stronger encryption, and TLS 1.3 support to support for organisations operating in security-sensitive environments

- New integration capabilities are under development with Avigilon CCTV, Microsoft Entra ID Single Sign-on, Traka key management, and more

- Automated tools to simplify the migration from GuardPoint Pro to GP10
