Meriton Street and its surrounding area of St Phillip’s Marsh is a place that is rich with history.
St Phillip’s Marsh was originally open grazing land and stayed that way for centuries until Bristol’s industrial revolution started to expand into the area. It developed into a small community in the mid-1800s, growing and welcoming other facilities like pubs, a church and a school. In 1960s, many were relocated, and their homes demolished to make way for commercial uses by Bristol Corporation.
Next to us, The Meriton, was a specialist school based in Bristol focused on providing education, support, mentoring and advice to teenage girls and young parents. Working with pregnant girls and young mothers, the Meriton's aim was to protect the welfare of all children, including unborn children and vulnerable young adults. It provided education for mothers aged 13-19 while caring for their children in the nearby nursery. It was opened in 1974 as the St Philips Marsh Nursery Readjustment Unit for Secondary Girls and closed in 2017.
St Philip's Marsh Nursery itself opened in 1951, taking over the St Philip's Infants School building and is still operating in 2024.
Meriton Foundry itself has been host to several different users. A rugby field connected to the school, milk depot, Foundry, boat repair yard and scaffolding yard. Prior to Meriton Foundry taking over, the site was home to illegal raves and unhoused.
Today, the site is home to a multitude of small businesses and start ups that share Meriton Foundry since 2017 as their place of creativity, community and services.
