Last month, we saw the joyful and inspiring news story of Manette Bailley, the 102-year-old woman who performed a sky dive for charity. Two years earlier she drove around Silverstone racetrack at 130mph in a Ferrari on her 100th birthday!

It is a striking reminder that age need be no barrier to many things, which brings us nicely to considering the health and safety of older workers in the workplace. With the pension age going up and life expectancy at about 80 for men and women, the prospects of retiring at 65, 60 or even earlier have diminished for many.

With this in mind, it's crucial to ensure your health and safety practices are suitable for all staff members. To learn more about health and safety for older workers, read our full blog: https://www.hsdept.co.uk/blog/health-and-safety-and-older-workers/

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) is an internationally recognised set of principles in which food safety hazards are controlled to reduce the risk of producing unsafe food. If you own a food business, you must implement a food safety management system based on the HACCP principles. It is important to understand the principles if you work with food.

A HACCP management system requires that potential food safety hazards are spotted and dealt with at specific points in the process — from selecting your suppliers, to consumption of the food.

At The Health & Safety Dept, we’re experts in this field. So not only can we help you put a plan in place, but we can help you maintain it too. By getting to know you and your business, we’ll create a bespoke system that helps keep your employees and customers safe and ensures you abide by the laws relevant to HACCP. Get in touch today.

Managing the risks when working with water... 💧

10/07/2024

As much as everyone looks forward to the warm summer months each year, there is one sad inevitability that we have to live with at this time; that is people getting into difficulty in the water, some of whom drown.

That is in a leisure context, but for some businesses it can be an occupational hazard all the year round. While most businesses who face this risk will have all the correct procedures in place, some do get it wrong.

To ensure your business is following the correct steps when it comes to working with water, check out our latest blog: https://buff.ly/3xSHELu

July is National Picnic Month!

Whilst this month encourages partaking in summer picnics with family and friends or as a summer social for the team, we wouldn’t be The Health & Safety Dept without pointing out some potential hazards for you to be aware of, as an employer hosting a party in the park!

Food hygiene must be considered to ensure the safety of your employees. Key areas to address include the storage/temperature of certain foods, allergy/dietary requirements, and the sanitation of eating utensils. Nobody wants to attend a picnic and leave with food poisoning or an allergic reaction now, do they?

We don’t mean to ruin your fun, but it’s our duty to highlight these hazards to keep you and your employees safe and enjoying picnics without food poisoning!
