Theme and details for April's Life Handover...

Anyone else feel bleughh about admin? I’m sure it doesn’t have to be that way with the right motivation… For whatever reason we might be avoiding a task, our next Life Handover session will explore alternative approaches to that tricky activity, hopefully helping us break the mental block and feel inspired to work on our death admin. The ‘Me and Bones’ comic I’ve drawn shows that despite thinking and talking about death quite a bit, I need some extra help to do those outstanding tasks!

The next Life Handover is 6:30pm Wed 30th April and will be my final Life Handover before taking an extended break, so if you've been waiting to find out what Life Handover is all about, this next one is your chance!

As always, it’s a free 1 hour online session. I come at the themes as an artist, offering my creative framework to approach the more emotional ‘thought work’ around end of life planning. There’s no need to consider yourself as ‘creative’ to participate, the idea is to use creative techniques to help us unpick the theme of the day. As I bid a farewell to Life Handover (for now) I say this with extra gratitude in my heart: Life Handover is made possible with thanks to support from Celebrant Sian Storey, Brass Bathtub CIC, Arts Council England and National Lottery Community Fund.

At the last Life Handover workshop we explored making a ‘self portrait’ out of our favourite things - which could be considered a legacy when passed on to others looking for comfort after our death. We responded to the topic of ‘favourites’ in different ways, which I feel is the value of art – that an exercise can draw forth a range of insights. We noted that our self portrait/legacy might not go down as intended, and that what people remember of us might be a shared memory or a personality trait. Pictured is my warm up doodle in blue, and in purple are a couple of things from my ‘favourites’ list.

The next Life Handover is 6:30pm 30th April – it’s a free 1 hour online session. I use my approach as an artist to offer my creative framework for the emotional ‘thought work’ around end of life planning. I use a mix of drawing, writing and movement activities in my workshops and there’s no need to consider yourself as ‘creative’ to participate. Next Life Handover is coming up on 26th March: As I’ve been considering what brings comfort to me when remembering my close friend who died a few years ago, I’ve been reflecting upon my own attributes that loved ones might want to connect with for their comfort after I die. It led me to explore what a legacy ‘self-portrait’ might look like – a collection of objects, resources or moments that tell the story of me.

The comic shows the initial questions I asked myself to help inspire the exercise I created for this session - I'm chatting with my future dead self, who I like to call 'Bones'.

For our next Life Handover held on Wednesday 26th March, 6:30-7:30pm bring your pens, pencils, paper and colours as we make a self-portrait made of our favourite things. Even though we use drawing and writing utensils to play with, there is no need to consider yourself ‘creative’ as all activities are open to all skill levels. Register your interest by emailing [email protected] for the Zoom details.

A reflection on the last Life Handover session - I created an exercise which counted life lessons amongst what we'd consider our legacy...

Taking time to reflect on our life lessons showed how much wisdom we had within ourselves! Although practical advice is useful, we mostly went down the (very poignant) emotional route. An insightful discovery was that despite being invited to think of someone/s we’d like to offer this advice to, some (myself included) found that the advice we gave may actually be directed to our younger selves. The drawings here are taken from the session’s exercise, giving advice to myself on being creatively lost…

I have been beavering away behind the scenes working on a new project, using creativity to help people gently explore mortality. I'm currently hosting free monthly (ish) online workshops called Life Handover, to help with the 'thought-work' around end of life planning. To give you a little insight, here's the summary of last night's Life Handover about Legacies.

It felt like a particularly heart-warming session in our latest Life Handover, as we discussed festivities from this time of year and what they mean to us. It was interesting to recognise that we could be ok with others not participating in rituals, traditions or activities with the same enthusiasm as us, and that in fact some of the traditions we ourselves have inherited, we have evolved to become our own version. To me, it seemed that legacies are underpinned by the values we live by. The activity I offered in our Life Handover session got us thinking about how our values show up in our favourite winter activities, and how we’d like to pass that on. Pictured here is my ‘how to’ showing ‘How to Play Games with Kindness’.

The next Life Handover is Wed 6:30pm 26th February and you’ll be welcome to join – it’s a free 1 hour online session. I come at the themes as an artist, offering my creative approach the more emotional ‘thought work’ around end of life planning. We started the last session with an intentionally ‘bad’ drawing, which goes to say, there’s no need to consider yourself as ‘creative’ to participate.
