This week's cautionary tale of what did we pull out a washing machine it's the hair pin, a repeat offender. These things can do real damage to the machine if they end up in the wash.

This Candy washer dryer had one stuck in the drain pump. They can also cause damage to hoses leading to leaks.

This top of the range Siemens heat pump dryer was constantly flashing the water tray alarm even though it was empty.

Some soggy dog hair and lint sitting between the two metal contacts will do that. This makes the machine think the base is constantly full of water setting the alarm off and preventing it from drying.

This 10 year old Liebherr fridge had a broken arm. Luckily Liebherr does a kit for everything and they even include instructions!

Fitted the new arm bracket and now the fridge closes smoothly without slamming. These fridges are top dollar but very well made.

This Sharp washing machine was a great/terrible example of excess detergent use.

Excess detergent and fabric conditioner use leads to.
Damaged/mouldy seals
Premature failure of drum components
Blocks the drains
Major cause of bad smells
Greasy marks on clothes
Poor wash results

To remedy this

Use half to two thirds of the manufacturers recommend dose - I have an 8kg machine and use 40-70g of powder per cycle, less if it's just a few bits or a short cycle.

Use less fabric softener or non at all. I very rarely use it, never on normal clothes. Excess fabric softener causes the black slime in the detergent drawer and around the seal.

Avoid short cycles wherever possible. Powder and pods won't fully dissolve on a 30 minute cold cycle. The quick cycle is for when you run out of clean pants and need some in a hurry.

Depending on use run a monthly clean cycle with a proper washing machine cleaner. Get a 3in1 cleaner, descaler and degreaser. Run it on a hot, long cycle or the drum clean setting if your machine has one.

This customer reported an E08 error on their Hoover washing washing machine. This normally means the motor brushes have worn. In this case one was totally worn out and the other partially. Both brushes replaced and the machine is back up and running.

As many of you who've met me know I'm not built for under stairs cupboards. This washing machine tucked away under the stairs wasn't draining. The customer had cleaned the filters but it still wouldn't drain.

I removed possibly the largest blockage I've pulled out of a machine from the sump hose. It was a mixture of torn fabric and children's socks.

One of our jobs on Friday was an element change on this hefty Neff double oven. I was very, very lucky it was the same height as my work bench. It slid straight in and out. These things are absolute tanks.

LG machines are great quality machines but they don't half make changing a door seal a faff. The edges of the seal are tucked in behind the weights so everything has to come off. Luckily this isn't our first rodeo and from initial enquiry to fitting only took a couple of days.

Ice forming at the bottom or water leaking from the door is a common problem with a lot of frost free freezers.

This is caused by a blockage in the drain hole at the base of the freezer. This can normally be solved by a full defrost but that isn't always a practical option. A quick blast with the steamer and probing with a long cable tie and were good to go again.
