Congratulations to our managing director, Nicola Roke, who was shortlisted in no less than three categories, taking home the HR Leader award on the night.

It caps of an amazing week, following on from news of our nomination for the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2026.

One of the worst things we see as a HR business is small businesses getting into trouble because they didn’t get the basics of HR right.

For small businesses, this can be costly.

From the moment that you’re in the process of hiring your first employee, you need to be aware of employment law and do certain activities to keep your business compliant.

While it might be tempting to fly under the radar, all it takes is one tribunal and it can be very costly.

We know. We’ve seen it happen.

Instead, a simple one-day training course could keep you from making costly mistakes.

We are running our first HR for Better Business training on 18 June for small and micro businesses.

If you run a small business or are responsible for the HR activities in a small business (such as HR admin or office managers), then this course is ideal for making sure you’re doing taking the right actions every time.

We will cover:

✅ The basics of employment law for recruiting, contracts and different employees
✅ How to manage HR records in the right way and be GDPR compliant
✅ The key HR policies to set the business up for success
✅ The statutory requirements for all types of leave including annual leave, sickness and family leave
✅ How to deal with basic HR queries and procedures relating to managing absence, underperformance, grievances and disciplinary
✅ How to reduce risk and exposure to legal claims

Are you planning to hire young workers this summer?

Students and other young people can be a neat solution if you need to fill some temporary positions this summer.

But watch out for the HR and legal implications of offering this sort of work.

Want a run through of what you’ll need to keep in mind?

We've put together a practical guide to help you remain compliant when hiring young workers this summer.

It covers such issues as:

➡️ Age-related employment regulations

➡️ Enhanced health and safety responsibilities e.g. duty of care

➡️ Minimum wage compliance

➡️ Working hours and rest break requirements

Our blog includes more information on all of these points as well as links to the best online resources to help you.

When employees are off work due to illness, it creates a bump in the road.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), absences at work are at a 10-year high, which means that sick days are costing your business more than ever.

Absences might feel like something you can’t control, but the truth is, there are ways to reduce it.

In our latest blog, we’re diving into the real impact of employee absence on productivity, morale and your bottom line.

We also share some strategies that have helped some of our clients reduce absence by up to 50%.

Have a read and you’ll find out:

➡️ Why short-term absences may be a sign of deeper issues
➡️ The role of flexible working, engagement, and clear policies
➡️ How to spot the early warning signs (and what to do about them)
➡️ Why your managers are key and how to support them to succeed

When employee absence goes unchecked, the pressure spreads across the team, which can then lead to disengagement, burnout and even more time off.

The good news? A few strategic changes can make a big difference.

What’s the one thing all high-performing teams have in common?

Things like having a strong culture and shared vision get a lot of airtime, but there’s something at the foundations of how a team can perform that gets less attention.

It’s psychological safety.

As a manager, creating a high-performing team is one of the toughest (and most rewarding) parts of the job.

And it starts with how safe your team feels to speak up, take risks, and be themselves.

That’s why we’ve put together a free guide called ‘A Manager’s Guide to Psychological Safety’.

In it you’ll get;

➡️ A whistle-stop tour of what psychological safety actually means
➡️ Simple ways to increase this within your team
➡️ Real-life examples
