For those who don’t know, I’m in the process of moving workshop. Well, nearly finished now. This was precipitated by the sad and unexpected death just before Christmas of the chap that I shared the workshop with. I can’t afford to rent the workshop on my own so this has forced me to go elsewhere. A blessing in disguise, really, as the old place is dark, damp, mouldy and ratty and the new place is none of these.

It’s been hard work, especially for the family of my late colleague who have been lumbered with dealing with the fallout. They have been brilliant at finding homes for the large piles of timber and tools (some of which worked!) alongside having to deal with his house and its contents. Rob was something of a hoarder but we’re nearly there, now. There is rubbish to deal with and there are still some machines to move on (to whit a pillar drill, a table saw and a planer/thicknesser) and a few bits of potentially useful timber, including some pretty stuff.

My advice would be not to move workshop unless you really have to!

After just over a couple of months (not all of it by choice) the dining table is at last put together.
When I began this project I promised a dining table with a twist. Here it is.

Just finished this tapestry weaving frame/loom for my missus and her chums. It's certainly not top-notch cabinetry but hopefully it will do the job. It's been one of the odd jobs I've been doing while waiting to put more finish on the table top. It also uses up a little more stock from the workshop.

Soon it will be time to get back to the table top - it has been too cold and wet in the workshop to carry on the finishing (between 2 and 6° last week) and I don't have the space to do it in the warm at home. One or two small jobs to finish off first, then back to the oiling.

The table top is now all shaped and is receiving its oil finish. The photos here show a single coat of oil although it has now had two coats. There are more coats to follow but the colour won't now change much. The leg frame has now had four coats, so the finish should be starting to build. Everything should get another coat tomorrow but then there is some festival or other causing a hiatus for a week or so, so the remaining coats will have to wait a bit.

After another couple of days away from the workshop, I'm back on the table again. The leg frame and all its gubbins is now complete, so now it's just a case of building the oil finish. The second coat went on today.

The top still needs some work, though. I've had a go at filling the various knots and shakes but the filling still needs sanding back once it's properly dry. Most of the edges still need rounding / softening too, then it will all need cleaning and a lot of oiling.

After another couple of days away from the workshop (!!?!), today I finally got the rest of the leg frame glued together. This will need a little fettling once the glue has cured: as the legs are canted outwards at 4°, the tops of the legs are raised on the outermost corners and will need planing down flush with the tops of the rails. There is a similar issue on the bottom of the legs which currently do not sit flat on the floor because of the leg rake angle. This will also need to be addressed, then the feet will need to be chamfered all round to resist the effects of having the table dragged across the floor and chipping the feet. Then there is the small matter of several coats of oil to apply and, of course, any self-respecting table needs a top.

The basic table frame is now complete. Next job is to put some finish on it (Danish oil, I think) then glue it together. Then I'll have to concentrate on getting the top clean and tidy, which promises to be a lot of grunt work with a plane.

Table news - after some drying time (and a couple of small jobs in the meantime) the table top material is glued together into wide enough pieces and the legs have been cut to length so that the tapers could be cut.

I'm starting work on a dining table, with a twist. First dig out a load of unused stock and begin the process of cleaning it up and getting it to the required dimensions. After initial planing and thicknessing, the stock is still oversized. It now needs to be left for a day or two for any internal stresses that have been unbalanced by machining to work themselves out. This will change the shape of the stock, which will then need to be re-planed and thicknessed. If the wood moves a lot, the process will need to be repeated, creeping up on the final dimensions. The stock also needs to dry out a bit - the workshop is very damp - so the drying and tension relaxing will be going on at the same time.
