Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is on its way. 📣

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 from self-employment and property need to use MTD for Income Tax for record keeping and quarterly updates. 📅

From 18 November 2025, identity verification becomes a legal requirement.

This date is not a deadline. It marks the start of a 12-month transition period, giving your company time to make sure all directors and people with significant control (PSCs) have verified their identity by their due dates.

📌 Making Tax Digital is coming in April 2026 👈

For who?
If you are a sole trader or a landlord and your turnover exceeds £50,000 you'll be required to submit quarterly self-assessments digitally to HMRC.

How?
This means keeping accurate digital records of income and expenses up to date on HMRC compatible software and sending a quarterly filing of profit and loss to HMRC and then a final self assessment return at the end of the tax year.

Why?
It will help HMRC and sole traders keep an eye on their potential tax liability throughout the year - but will inevitably involve being a LOT more organised as well as ensuring regular compliance to avoid any fines or penalties.
