๐Ÿ‚ September: The Month Working Parents Secretly Dread

New school year.

New uniforms.

New childcare arrangements.

New clubs, schedules, homework routines... and somehow, the same number of hours in the day.

For many working parents, September can feel like a second January. While children are settling into new routines, parents are often juggling school runs, childcare logistics and work responsibilities all at once.

That's why this time of year can be a great opportunity for employers and managers to check in with their teams.

๐Ÿ’ฌ A simple conversation can go a long way:

โœ… How are things going with the new school term?

โœ… Do you have the support you need?

โœ… Is your current working pattern still working for you?

โœ… Are there any challenges we should be aware of?

With the ongoing implementation of the Employment Rights Act 2025, including enhanced family-friendly rights, day-one rights to paternity and parental leave, and upcoming changes to flexible working, supporting working parents is becoming more important than ever. [acas.org.uk], [assets.pub...ice.gov.uk]

The organisations that create family-friendly workplaces don't necessarily have all the answers.

They simply make space for meaningful conversations, flexible thinking and genuine support.

Because when working parents feel valued and supported, everybody benefits:

๐ŸŒŸ Better wellbeing

๐ŸŒŸ Higher engagement

๐ŸŒŸ Stronger retention

๐ŸŒŸ More productive teams

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Managers: Take 10 minutes this week to check in with the working parents in your team. It could be one of the most valuable conversations you have all month.

๐Ÿ’ญ What is the biggest challenge for working parents in September: childcare, flexible working, school routines or something else?

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Parents, is it just me or is September somehow more chaotic than the summer holidays?

How Managers Can Support Mental Health Conversations

๐Ÿ˜… Manager: "My door is always open."

Employee: "Great, can we talk about my workload?"

Manager: "Oh... not like that."

We've all heard that organisations should support mental health at work, but let's be honestโ€”sometimes wellbeing conversations can feel awkward for everyone involved.

Employees worry about being a burden.

Managers worry about saying the wrong thing.

And somehow everyone ends up discussing the weather instead. โ˜”

The reality is that managers don't need to be therapists, counsellors, or mind-readers. They just need to be willing to start a conversation.

Sometimes a simple:

๐Ÿ’ฌ "How are you doing?"

becomes:

๐Ÿ’ฌ "How are you really doing?"

And that's often where the most meaningful conversations begin.

Good managers don't wait until someone is off sick, disengaged, or handing in their resignation. They create an environment where people feel comfortable speaking up before small concerns become bigger problems.

Because despite what some people think...

โœ… Mental health conversations aren't HR's job alone.

โœ… They don't make problems worse.

โœ… And "just push through it" is not a wellbeing strategy. ๐Ÿ˜…

The best workplaces aren't the ones where nobody struggles.

They're the ones where people feel safe enough to say when they do.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What's the best question a manager can ask an employee during a one-to-one?

26/08/2026

โŒ Instead of asking โ€œeverything okayโ€?

โœ… Try asking โ€œwhat's taking most of your energy right nowโ€?
