Congratulations to Karen Kirby from greenshoot HR, winner of Best 60 Seconds at yesterday's Business Focus Burton meeting.

Karen took a slightly different approach to her minute.

Rather than simply telling us everything greenshoot HR does, she also talked about what they don't do.

And it worked.

It helped make it much clearer where greenshoot HR fits, the type of support they provide and, importantly, what clients shouldn't expect from them.

Sometimes explaining what you don't do can be just as powerful as explaining what you do.

It certainly got the attention of the room and earned Karen our Best 60 Seconds award for the week.

Social media is networking with a keyboard.

That was one of the key messages from today's Business Focus Burton feature presenter, Mark Northall - Social Media Trainer

Mark challenged the room to think about whether we're actually getting business from social media – or whether we're simply posting.

His comparison with networking was particularly relevant to a BFB audience.

Imagine turning up every Thursday, delivering your 60 seconds and then immediately going home without speaking to anyone.

You probably wouldn't expect to build many relationships or generate much business.

Yet, as Mark pointed out, that's exactly how many businesses approach social media:

Post. Disappear. Post. Disappear.

Instead, Mark encouraged us to think about social media in exactly the same way we think about networking.

Turn up.

Be visible.

Listen.

Join conversations.

Build relationships.

Follow up.

And keep coming back.

He also looked at the journey from visibility → familiarity → trust → conversation → business, reminding us that likes and views aren't necessarily the end result we're looking for.

A really interactive feature presentation with plenty for everyone in the room to take away and apply to their own social media.

Some news is simply too good to squeeze into 60 seconds!

Congratulations to Sammy Dyche of Open House Burton and Swadlincote, winner of this morning's Best 60 Seconds at Business Focus Burton.

Sammy used his minute to share the fantastic news that Open House Burton & Swadlincote has been named Estate Agent of the Year in the British Property Awards.

Awards like this don't happen by accident. They're recognition of the service, commitment and attention given to customers day after day — something those of us who know Sammy through BFB get to see regularly.

And that's one of the great things about networking every week.

We don't just hear what somebody does. We get to know the person behind the business, see their successes and celebrate those successes with them.

A very informative feature presentation at Business Focus Burton this morning from Stuart Reynolds of Equity & General Financial Services.

Stuart took us into an area where understanding exactly who you are dealing with really matters — regulated and unregulated financial advice.

He explained the protection that comes with regulated advice, how you can check an adviser's credentials through the FCA Register, and some of the important differences between tied, restricted and independent financial advisers.

As an Independent Financial Adviser himself, Stuart also talked about the breadth of financial planning and the importance of looking at the bigger picture rather than simply considering an individual financial product.

Pensions, investments, estate planning, protection, mortgages, business finance and intergenerational wealth can all form part of that wider conversation.

Perhaps one of the biggest takeaways was simply this:

Know who is advising you, understand how they are regulated and understand the choices available to you.
