A huge thank you to Karen Kirby from greenshoot HR for being our featured speaker at Business Focus Burton today.

Karen gave members an informative update on the employment law and HR changes that are being introduced, helping businesses understand what they need to prepare for over the coming months.

One of the strongest messages from the presentation was the importance of keeping accurate records.

✔ Memories aren't always reliable.

✔ We often remember things differently.

✔ Dates and details can easily be forgotten.

✔ Written records provide evidence of conversations, actions and follow-up activities.

To demonstrate the point, Karen ended her session with a fun quiz based on the 60-second presentations given by members earlier in the year. It quickly became clear how much information can be missed when we rely on memory alone!

That was the question posed by our personalised clothing expert Brian Samson during his excellent 60-second presentation at this week's Business Focus Burton meeting.

Brian made a great point:

If your clothing clearly displays your company name, logo and branding, people instantly know what business you're in without even having to ask.

Whether you're attending networking events, meeting customers, working on-site or simply out and about, branded clothing acts as a walking advertisement for your business.

It's one of the simplest ways to increase visibility, create a professional image and make your business more memorable.

Tax Myths Busted!

A big thank you to Michael Wells, our resident accountant at Business Focus Burton, for delivering a fantastic feature presentation this week.

Michael challenged members with an interactive tax quiz designed to test our knowledge and uncover some of the common myths surrounding tax, expenses and business finances.

It's fair to say there were a few surprises around the room!

The session reminded us all that what we hear from friends, social media or other business owners isn't always accurate when it comes to tax. Getting the right advice from a qualified professional can make a huge difference and help avoid costly mistakes.

This week’s 10-minute member presentation came from Scott Pettingale of Fuse4, who gave Business Focus Burton members an insight into how creative design and technology are working together to help businesses communicate more effectively.

Scott demonstrated how he had created a short animated video to explain a client’s business, showing how animation can simplify complex messages and engage audiences far more effectively than text alone.

One particularly interesting discussion centred around the use of AI within the creative process. Scott explained how AI can be used to enhance projects such as animated explainer videos, including generating professional voiceovers without the need to incur the additional cost of hiring a voiceover artist.

It was a fascinating presentation that highlighted how businesses of all sizes can utilise modern design tools and AI technology to create professional marketing content while keeping budgets under control.

A big thank you to Scott for sharing his expertise and giving members plenty of ideas to take back to their own businesses.
