Important update for professionals supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people.

South Sudan is no longer included within the Streamlined Asylum Process. The policy now applies only to young people from Sudan and Eritrea.

If you are working with a young person from either country who has not yet received a positive asylum decision, please contact the HO Team to discuss referral onto the Streamlined Asylum Process.

If a young person from Sudan or Eritrea has not been automatically referred onto SAP, it may be worth checking whether an outstanding age dispute remains recorded on the Home Office file, as this can sometimes prevent referral without the Local Authority being aware.

Triple planning is one of the most powerful tools we have when supporting unaccompanied and separated young people seeking asylum (it’s also a statutory responsibility!)

It helps us prepare for three possible futures; a positive decision, a long wait or a refusal with the goal to keep the young person informed, involved and empowered throughout.

Triple planning isn’t just for social workers. Triple planning should be a multi-agency approach with everyone involved in a young person’s life. IROs, personal advisors, ESOL teachers, carers, key workers, advocates, youth workers, foster carers, residential staff everyone plays a role in supporting safety, stability and hope.

We know we can’t predict an asylum outcome (especially in the current political climate). Triple planning attempts to reduce fear, build resilience and makes sure young people know their rights and options throughout.

If you’d like to deepen your confidence with triple planning and strengthen your practice, you can join our training where we explore this work in a clear, supportive and practitioner‑friendly way.

As quickly as I am writing this stuff more stuff comes out 🤦‍♀️

Here are the proposed changes to age assessment that were announced in the king’s speech.

Essentially, the Home Office want to bind local authorities to their decisions on age.

I’ll do another post on that judgment about the NAAB not being independent of the Home Office tomorrow

Triple planning is a statutory requirement but for many practitioners, it still feels abstract, overwhelming or hard to translate into day‑to‑day practice.

To support the workforce, we’ve created a new series of simple, visual infographics breaking triple planning down into clear, practical steps and ideas.

Today we’re sharing the first in the series: Introducing Triple Planning; a quick, accessible overview of what triple planning is and the principles that underpin it.

Designed for social workers, IROs, PAs, key workers and service managers supporting unaccompanied and trafficked young people.

Roll up gang!

If you’re a social worker practising in one of the East of England local authorities we have 9 spaces left on SAEF training in July at a subsidised rate.

If you want in, please email [email protected] and we’ll put you in touch with the funding organisation.

If you’re not in one of these local authorities but would like SAEF training, put it in the comments and I’ll email your L&D team

Did you ask for age assessment case law on your timeline? Probably not… but here we are

There’s a fuller blog post on the website but if you’re after a quick update, I’ve tried to condense it into 10 slides.

Enjoy!

The government are consulting on proposals that could restrict children’s access to social media, and BASW are exploring what this might mean for separated children.
My view is that it’s complex (helpful - I know!).

Social media can facilitate harm through exposure to unsafe adults, harmful content, pressure to be constantly available but it can also do good. It helps young people stay connected to family and friends, access support and see identities and communities they may not encounter day‑to‑day.

I’d love to hear from practitioners. How do the young people you support use social media? What do they rely on it for? What might the impact be if that access was restricted?

If you’ve ever been on our training you will know that we LOVE the young asylum guide and encourage everyone to use it to support young people seeking asylum.

have announced that they are currently updating the guide which means it is now temporarily offline - boo! However they are working with young people and to update the guide, place it on the main right to remain website and ensure it works with the translation tools - yay!

The refugee council’s words and pictures guide is still available, the right to remain toolkit (adults) is still available and MiCLU who is who is still available.

To get updates for the new young asylum guide, subscribe to right to remains’ newsletter

As part of our practical tools series, we’re sharing how vision boards can support triple planning. They offer a visual, creative way for young people to express their hopes and ideas, and can make communication feel easier and more natural, even without an interpreter.
If you’d like to feel more confident in meeting triple planning requirements and using tools like this in practice, you can book onto our training, just get in touch via the link in our bio.

“SAEF makes it harder to conclude someone is an adult.”
We heard this through the grapevine recently (from someone who has not been trained) and it’s simply not true, but it did give us an idea for content ;)
Curious about how SAEF actually works in practice?
Our training is built to empower practitioners, not restrict them.
Door’s open for April and May.
