We have a great opportunity to join Suffolk County Council as an Archaeology Officer
Salary: Grade 5- £34,434 per annum (pro rata for part time)
Hours: 37 hours per week, flexible working options available
Contract: Permanent

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Suffolk County Council's Archaeological Service as an Archaeology Officer.

Based at the Bury Resource Centre in Bury St Edmunds, you will work alongside Senior Archaeological Officers to provide specialist archaeological advice that supports sustainable development and protects Suffolk's rich historic environment.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced archaeologist to develop a career in curatorial archaeology while helping to conserve and promote the heritage of one of England's most archaeologically diverse counties.

Two archaeological excavations by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service in 2013 and 2014 at Clare and Euston revealed three brick kilns. These were characteristic of so-called ‘Suffolk kilns’, being rectangular in plan with twin furnace chambers. This week our guest writers Chris Fern and Rob Brooks from Cotswold Archaeology tell us more.

It has been a busy few weeks on site at Alpheton, with volunteers from Suffolk Mind, Suffolk Family Carers and Lavenham Primary School working with us and UCL Institute of Archaeology students excavating the Roman villa complex. A few surprises include uncovering an earlier building under the barn-type building and also in the enclosure ditch we found the bronze handle from a scalpel.

Last week, we enjoyed hosting pupils from Castle Hill Primary School at the Alpheton Roman villa excavations, where they were involved with the digging and finds washing! Local volunteers have also been on site, working alongside students from UCL Institute of Archaeology, where they focused on excavating the remains of the bath house.
