The business world worships “more.” 🙄

Yeah…I’m not sorry for that one.

More turnover.
More customers.
More employees.
More offers.
More growth.

But fixing businesses has taught me that “more” is often just camouflage.

These lessons were not learned from tidy case studies, once the outcome was already secure.

💀They were learned while payroll was approaching.
💀While cash was running out.
💀While teams were frightened.
💀While founders were exhausted.

And while the decision that looked completely wrong on the surface was the one the numbers, AND the future of the business, actually required.

🤌🏽I have told businesses to sell less.
🤌🏽I have restructured the role of the person generating the most revenue.
🤌🏽I have recommended decisions that created more tax in the short term.
🤌🏽I have found “cashflow problems” that were actually people, pricing, leadership or identity problems.

And I have watched businesses become stronger when their founders stopped asking:

“How do we get more?”

And FINALLY asked:

“What isn’t working?”

You might be the problem 👀

But being the problem does not automatically make someone a bad founder.

Refusing to consider they might be though…that makes them a dangerous one.

And not in the sexy way. 🙄

I have walked into businesses with cash problems that were actually decision problems.

Team problems that were actually leadership problems.

Sales problems that were actually clarity problems.

Operational problems created by a founder who made themselves the bottleneck but still needed everyone else to perform better.

The symptom is rarely the entire story.

So no, I won’t arrive, agree with YOUR diagnosis and start applying “fixes” just to make everyone feel productive.

I will follow the pattern until I find what is actually producing it.

And sometimes, that leads back to YOU.

If that sentence makes you curious rather than defensive, I can work with it.

If it makes you furious? 😡

If you need the woman fixing your business to pretend she never feels fear while building her own, this is probably your cue to unfollow me 👋🏼

I’m not here for sympathy. I’m here to tell the truth.

I am more than slightly delusional and completely unhinged.

And yet…

On a morning when cash is slow and your brain is turning every unanswered message into a verdict, those words can feel like a written statement with no weight behind them.

I can walk into somebody else’s business and see what’s not working.

I can follow the numbers, understand the people, separate the symptom from the cause and make the difficult decision.

Yet I can still look at my own business and wonder whether anybody will actually buy what I’m selling.

That is one of the cruellest parts of building a business.

Being good at what you do does not exempt you from fear. Sometimes it raises the stakes…because you know exactly what failure could cost.

💀 A quiet inbox starts to feel like evidence.
💀 A slow week becomes a forecast.
💀 One unanswered proposal makes you question an entire body of work.

And suddenly you’re allowing what happened this week to say something about who you are and what you’re capable of.

This is part of my villain era.

Not pretending I’m fearless.

Refusing to let temporary fear make permanent decisions for me.

And if you recognise yourself in this, remember: the gap between being brilliant at what you do and being known for it is a business problem, not a character flaw.

Fear isn’t a U-turn.

Often, it’s the signal that you’re standing at the edge of something big enough to change everything.

Change what genuinely needs changing. Make the ask. Send the proposal. Follow up. Let yourself be seen.

Push through.

You don’t need to become her.

You need to stop abandoning her whenever things frighten you.

Well. We should probably be properly introduced.

I’m Jess…The Fixer.

I’m 34, from South Wales, have been married to Luke for 10 years and share a house with five Alaskan Malamutes and two cats.

Chaos doesn’t frighten me.

In fact, it probably comforts me. 😂

Things I love:

🤌🏽 a properly made, very strong cappuccino
🤌🏽 beautiful clothes, shoes and bags
🤌🏽 Antiques Road Trip
🤌🏽 peaty single malt whisky and deep red wine
🤌🏽 taking things apart and putting them back together…be it electronics, furniture, clothes, businesses 👀

I also sing and even spent some time in a band. 🎤

My brain rarely takes the obvious path. It spots patterns, connects dots, reverse-engineers everything and refuses to accept “that’s just how it’s always been done.”

I’ve built businesses, made expensive mistakes and experienced brilliant and terrifying months, sometimes simultaneously.

I’ve celebrated an £80k client turnaround while working with my own board to bridge a cash-flow gap.

That is real business: success and struggle CAN exist in the same room.

I live with epilepsy and fibromyalgia, so some days I fix businesses and others require pyjamas and an Antiques Road Trip binge.

I’m incredibly ambitious, very driven, more than slightly unhinged and definitely delusional.

And I won’t be adding to the lie social media spins about business.

In fact, I’ll be doing the opposite.

There will be pain, ugliness and brutality here, because they’re part of building something that matters too.

When it gets hard, WHAT you’re building it for, WHY you’re doing it, that will be the thing that keeps you moving through it.

And when you need someone beside you who isn’t frightened by the mess?

Me. I want to help.

Give me something messy or not quite making sense and my brain comes alive. I’ll spot the connection everyone else has missed, ask the question everyone has avoided…and stay to help do something about it.

So expect business, brutal honesty, uncomfortable conversations, expensive lessons, dogs, coffee, probably whisky and the occasional gorge outfit.

I wasn’t a difficult child…😏

Well at the very least, I was an early adopter of strategic boundaries 😂

Because an alarming number of business problems can be traced back to a yes that should’ve been a no.

😶 Yes to the client because the cash looked useful.
😶 Yes to “just one little extra.”
😶 Yes to the offer that sells but makes absolutely no money.
😶 Yes to an opportunity that looks impressive and quietly makes your entire life worse.

Then one day you look up and realise you’ve built a very successful business you can’t ruddy stand.

Oops. 🙊 don’t worry, I’ve been there.

No isn’t negative.

No is how you protect the time, profit and sanity required for the right yes.

Sounds simple. Isn’t as easy as it looks.
So chickadee, time to channel your inner babba who loves saying no to quite literally everything.

Turns out it’s my apparent area of expertise (ask my clients 👀)

I wasn’t being awkward back then; I was preserving capacity.

Visionary, really. 😂

If losing one client scares you boo, that’s the problem.

It used to scare me.

Six years ago I wanted more clients.

A full client list. More invoices. More people saying yes.

Because I was fairly green and, in my head, volume = success.

Booked up? Brilliant 🤩
More revenue? Obviously 🙄
More clients? Yes please 🙏🏼

What I wasn’t looking at was what all that volume was actually doing to the business.

❓Was it profitable?
❓Was the work good?
❓Did the client relationship make sense?
❓Could we actually serve them properly?

Or had we just built something that looked impressive from the outside and was quietly becoming very dependent on keeping absolutely everyone?

Because that’s the bit nobody really talks about.

A client can be worth a lot of money and still be a risk.

A service can bring in decent revenue and still be a pain in the backside.

A fully booked business can look fabulous and yet one customer walking out the door would have everyone gathering hanging on a wing and a prayer. 😂

That’s not security.

That’s dependency wearing a nice turnover figure. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Now, I look at it completely differently.

I want good clients.
Good margins.
Work that makes sense.
Capacity.
Breathing room.

And yes, I genuinely want to know how many clients we could lose before it actually hurt.

Not because I want to lose them; Because I never want a business to be held hostage by one invoice.

Six years ago I counted how many clients I had.

Now I’m much more interested in how many I don’t need.

Turns out quality over quantity isn’t just a nice little phrase; It’s a very different way of building a business.

My risk tolerance is less “calculated” and more “go on then.”

We’re not in business for certainty. If you need certainty to keep going, it’ll fall apart the moment business does what business does.

This week, two people offered to buy one of my businesses. I refused both.

I handed another back at £48k pre-tax profit. It came to me at a £30k loss.

Three weeks into a third, I found what was making the team flounder, fixed it and built a system worth £50k.

Meanwhile, one of mine was absorbing a £100k loss in annual recurring income. Relationships ended. Life happened. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Elsewhere, clients are struggling to pay and their hit landed on us. So I told the board the money wasn’t coming in…before I had a solution.

I wasn’t The Fixer with the answer. I was an owner with a problem I couldn’t solve alone.

Together, we rebuilt a six-year payment system that no longer worked and found a bridging advance while the real fix goes in.

Best meeting all year 💥

A business in trouble isn’t one with a problem. It’s one where the problem stays secret from the people who could help.

Six years. Five businesses at once. Three failed. Two very much didn’t.

In 2022, a provider’s technical fault cost us £30k in a fortnight. We made 90% of our team redundant and moved back in with my in-laws. Worst year I’ve had.

The next was our best: record revenue, record profit, personal debt cleared.

So if business is hard right now, you might not be failing, darling. You might simply be in business.

Sometimes the risk pays. Sometimes it knocks you clean out.

Difficulty doesn’t disqualify you. Needing help doesn’t make you a fraud. Competence isn’t immunity.

I’m not selling success. I’m selling the graft, the honesty and what can come out the other side.

I’m not romanticising the risk, either. My family comes first. I’d walk away if I had to.

I work to live. I don’t live to work.

That doesn’t make me less ambitious. It means I remember what this is for.

Nobody should be in business for the vibes.

And if someone tells you “it’s easy”, they’re either lying for the sale or doing it wrong.

Strong opinion. Still true.
