Class 1 HGV Driver – Auction Site & Yard Support

Gavel Auctioneers Limited is a specialist firm of Valuers and Auctioneers, focused on the disposal of machinery and business assets. Operating from our 40,000 sq ft Auction Centre in Caerphilly, we deliver regular online auctions both from our premises and at third-party locations across the UK.
We are currently seeking a reliable, hardworking, and flexible individual to join our team in a dual-role position as a Class 1 HGV Driver and Auction Site/Yard Operative. This is a varied and hands-on role with responsibilities split between driving duties and on-site auction/yard support.
Key Responsibilities:
Driving & Transport Duties (Class 1 HGV):
Collection and delivery of a wide range of items including catering equipment, furniture, vehicles, plant, construction, and agricultural machinery.
Driving and operating a variety of company vehicles, including:
3.5t vans
7.5t box trucks
26t curtain-side vehicles with 6-ton tail lift
44t Scania tractor unit with low loader, curtain-side, and box trailers
Loading and unloading cargo, including manual handling of awkward or heavy items when required.
Securely loading items using winches, ramps, chains, straps, and other securing mechanisms.
Route planning, including navigation of rural and construction-heavy areas, and managing abnormal/wide load permits and escorts where necessary.
Completing vehicle inspections, reporting defects, and ensuring all vehicles/trailers are roadworthy.
Maintaining all compliance documentation, delivery notes, transport logs, and adhering to tachograph and driver hours regulations.
Professional and courteous communication with clients during collections and deliveries.
There will be items such as furniture which will require handballing.
Auction Centre & Yard Support:
When not on driving duties, you will support day-to-day operations within the auction yard and on client sites.
Responsibilities include:
Preparing and presenting machinery, vehicles, and equipment for auction, including cleaning and basic functionality checks.
Safely moving and marshalling vehicles using forklifts, telehandlers, or other equipment.
Assisting with auction setup, collections, and load-outs.
Maintaining the auction yard to a high standard of cleanliness and organisation.
Carrying out basic maintenance and fault reporting on equipment.
Supporting with the movement and storage of items throughout the site.
Operating materials handling equipment (telehandlers and forklifts).
Collecting vehicles using trade plates where required.
Candidate Requirements:
Valid HGV Class 1 (C+E) licence with CPC and Digital Tachograph Card.
Experience transporting heavy or awkward loads, ideally using a low loader.
Comfortable with manual handling and physically demanding work.
Forklift and/or telehandler certification (advantageous, but training can be provided).
Flexible and adaptable – able to switch between driving and yard/site duties as needed.
Excellent communication, organisation, and customer service skills.
Good understanding of vehicle safety, load security, and transport compliance.
