Recent news of Jon Snow's Alzheimer’s diagnosis has brought an important conversation back into the spotlight.

What is the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia?

We often hear “Alzheimer’s” and “dementia” used interchangeably, but they’re not the same.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a set of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and behaviour.

It can be caused by many different diseases. These diseases affect the brain in different ways, resulting in different types of dementia.

Alzheimer’s is a specific disease in the brain and the most common cause of dementia, and most commonly affects people over 65.

Alzheimer’s can begin in the brain years before symptoms appear, and like all types of dementia, it progresses over time.

Understanding the difference matters. It helps us talk more accurately, support more effectively, and reduce stigma for the millions of people and families affected.

👕 THE DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY CHEST OF DRAWERS

Most people see a dresser.

A dementia coach sees a decision-making center.

Every morning, a person living with dementia is asked to make dozens of choices.

Where are my socks?

Which drawer has my shirt?

What should I wear today?

For a healthy brain, these decisions happen automatically.

For a brain living with dementia, they can become exhausting.

That is why the design of a chest of drawers matters.

Large labels help the brain locate items more easily. Picture cues often work even better than words. Organized drawers reduce searching and frustration. Consistent placement helps create routine. Good lighting makes clothing easier to see. An outfit basket prepared for the day reduces decision fatigue and supports success.

Notice that this dresser is not packed full.

The goal is not storage.

The goal is understanding.

Too many choices can overwhelm the brain. A smaller number of favorite, comfortable, easy-to-wear items often leads to greater confidence and independence.

And notice the personal touches.

A family photograph.

A meaningful keepsake.

A favorite memory.

Because getting dressed is not simply about putting on clothes.

It is about expressing identity.

The blue sweater she has always loved.

The veteran’s hat he wears with pride.

The church outfit worn for years.

These items tell a story.

And every person deserves to have their story honored.

A well-designed chest of drawers helps transform frustration into success, confusion into confidence, and dependence into greater independence.

Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

🧠 Unusual dementia fact:

I've seen so many videos on this. It really is amazing what music can do for someone ❤️

People with Alzheimer’s disease can sometimes remember and sing songs from decades ago, even when they can no longer recognize close family members or recall recent events. That's because musical memories are often stored in brain regions that are affected later in the disease process.

Music can unlock memories, emotions, and connections that seem otherwise lost. 🎵💙

Dementia is not a single disease—it's an umbrella term for a range of conditions that affect memory, thinking, and daily life.

Some of the most common types include:
🧠 Alzheimer's disease
🧠 Vascular dementia
🧠 Lewy body dementia
🧠 Frontotemporal dementia
🧠 Mixed dementia

Each type presents differently, but all can have a profound impact on individuals and their families.

By learning the signs, reducing stigma, and supporting those affected, we can help create more dementia-friendly communities. Early diagnosis and understanding can make a real difference.

Let's raise awareness, encourage conversations, and show compassion to everyone living with dementia.

Dementia isn’t one-size-fits-all and neither are its symptoms.

Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies are among the most common types – and each affects the brain in different ways.

From memory loss and confusion to changes in behaviour, language or movement, the symptoms can vary widely depending on the type of dementia.

This guide highlights some of the common symptoms linked to each illness, but it’s also important to remember that no two people experience dementia in the same way.

By recognising the different signs, including these lesser-known symptoms, we can spot changes earlier and help more people access an early diagnosis.
