Should the Government be meddling in recruitment?
3 weeks ago the Government announced a £1.5m investment to boost recruitment in the aviation sector with the 'Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund'.
Something we found a bit odd.
Well, here they are again, now getting involved in a recruitment drive for logistics with 'Generation Logistics'.
The nub of this is people don't currently consider a job in logistics and the initial focus is attracting 16-24-year-olds (away from other sectors).
We don't like this either.
- Why is Government investment needed when the deep pockets of the likes of Tesco and Amazon are involved?
- As one sector 'wins' another one 'loses'. Why should one be given a leg-up by the Government?
- Presumably, Generation Logistics will be competing directly with the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund. Is that not, well, bizarre?
Maybe we are looking at this wrong, in which case feel free to put us straight.
But if the Government want to invest time and money into recruitment, we would much rather they look at the travesty of seasonal fruit-pickers arriving from overseas saddled with debt.
