SMEs can find recruitment tough in easier times, so it is no surprise that most are finding it even more challenging now - 95% according to this poll.

As the article highlights:
"One of the challenges faced by SMEs when recruiting was the size of their employer profile in comparison to larger organisations."

Which is why we love working with them.

Typically, they haven't really thought about how to properly promote their vacancies, and wouldn't know what an 'employer value proposition' is.

Resource and expertise to proactively target candidates are usually about nil, and recruitment processes clunky.

So we do it all for them.

And because we look after all of their hiring strategy (including retention) there are massive time and cost savings to be had.

If you are in that 95% we should probably talk.

Should the Government be meddling in recruitment?

3 weeks ago the Government announced a £1.5m investment to boost recruitment in the aviation sector with the 'Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund'.

Something we found a bit odd.

Well, here they are again, now getting involved in a recruitment drive for logistics with 'Generation Logistics'.

The nub of this is people don't currently consider a job in logistics and the initial focus is attracting 16-24-year-olds (away from other sectors).

We don't like this either.

- Why is Government investment needed when the deep pockets of the likes of Tesco and Amazon are involved?
- As one sector 'wins' another one 'loses'. Why should one be given a leg-up by the Government?
- Presumably, Generation Logistics will be competing directly with the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund. Is that not, well, bizarre?

Maybe we are looking at this wrong, in which case feel free to put us straight.

But if the Government want to invest time and money into recruitment, we would much rather they look at the travesty of seasonal fruit-pickers arriving from overseas saddled with debt.

One hire. Two fees.

The surest sign that your recruitment process - and the way you are working with recruiters in particular - is a mess.

It can happen for a number of reasons, ranging from questionable recruitment practices to just downright misfortune. And it is usually a nightmare for everyone involved.

This article gives some good advice on who should get paid.
Most companies don't follow this, preferring the "who sent the CV first" approach, which is a sure-fire way of encouraging a recruiter race to the bottom.

What would be better advice is how to avoid ever being in this position at all.

If you need it, get in touch.

The 'effective cause' principle is used to avoid hirers being obligated to pay fees to more than one recruitment agency.

No, we're not going to do the obvious and cast stones at the recruitment agency advertising this.

This is a much more serious question:
Why would a company looking to hire a Group Procurement Director allow this to happen?

It's long past time hiring organisations took accountability.
Here are questions they could ask:

"How are you going to promote our business and vacancy?".
Or:
"How will you attract the best candidates to our job?"

If the response is "I'm going to tell people I'm thrilled and then patronise them" you probably need to ask someone else.
There are some great recruiters out there if you take the time to find them.

"I could do my 5-day per week job in 4"

That's quite a curious claim, isn't it?
On the basis that most jobs are not finite, is this not another way of telling your employer you have 25% more capacity?

If you are experiencing candidate drop-out, the chances are your recruitment process is too lengthy or complex.
An easy fix if ever there was one.

Although according to this research, most employers aren't even aware of it.
