'Cambridge researchers develop wearable AI device to restore natural speech after stroke'

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a wearable, non-invasive device that could help stroke survivors regain the ability to communicate naturally and fluently, without relying on brain implants or slow assistive technologies.

The device, called Revoice, is a soft, flexible choker that uses ultra-sensitive sensors and artificial intelligence to decode speech intent and emotional cues from the body. Designed for people with post-stroke speech impairments such as dysarthria, it translates silently mouthed words into full, expressive sentences in real time.

Revoice captures subtle vibrations from the throat muscles alongside heart rate data, which together act as signals of intended speech and emotional state. These signals are processed by two AI agents: one reconstructs words from fragments of mouthed speech, while the other uses contextual information — including emotional state, time of day or environmental cues — to expand short phrases into complete sentences.

In a small trial involving five stroke patients with dysarthria and ten healthy volunteers, the system achieved a word error rate of 4.2% and a sentence error rate of just 2.9%. Participants reported a 55% increase in communication satisfaction. The findings were published in Nature Communications.

Unlike many existing assistive speech technologies, which depend on eye tracking, letter-by-letter input or invasive implants, Revoice aims to provide seamless, intuitive communication. Users can choose to expand short phrases into longer sentences through simple gestures, such as nodding.

About half of stroke survivors develop dysarthria, either alone or alongside aphasia. The condition results from weakened muscles in the face, mouth and vocal cords, often leading to slurred speech or short, disjointed phrases. While speech therapy can help many patients recover over time, everyday conversation often remains challenging.

Professor Luigi Occhipinti, who led the research at Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, said the device addresses a gap between rehabilitation and real-world communication. He noted that while many patients eventually recover speech, there is little need for invasive solutions — but a strong demand for portable, intuitive tools that support daily interaction.

In one trial example, a mouthed phrase such as “We go hospital” was expanded into a full sentence reflecting frustration and urgency, based on elevated heart rate and late-night timing. The system uses a lightweight embedded language model, keeping power consumption low.

The researchers are planning a clinical study in Cambridge with native English-speaking dysarthria patients later this year. Future versions are expected to support multiple languages, broader emotional interpretation and fully self-contained everyday use. The work was supported by the British Council, Haleon and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

'Cambridge Science Park strengthens leadership team to support long-term growth and innovation'

Cambridge Science Park is strengthening its senior leadership team as it looks to deliver its long-term growth ambitions and reinforce its position at the heart of science and technology innovation in Cambridge and across the UK.

The leadership expansion aligns with the Park’s emerging masterplan, which sets out a vision for future development and continued support for high-growth science, technology and deep-tech businesses.

David McNee has been appointed Estate Director, taking responsibility for estate strategy and day-to-day operations across Cambridge Science Park. He brings extensive experience in estate and property management, with expertise spanning facilities management, compliance, health and safety, and strategic estate planning.

McNee joins from global real estate firm CBRE, where he spent 14 years. Most recently, he led property and facilities management for Shaftesbury Plc, overseeing some of central London’s most prominent destinations, including Carnaby Street, Soho, Chinatown and Seven Dials.

Alongside this, Alexandra Bishop has been named Director of Marketing, Communications and Community. In her new role, she will focus on strengthening the Park’s brand, raising its profile and enhancing the experience of its tenant community. Bishop is a former financial journalist with The Daily Telegraph and the BBC, and brings more than two decades of experience delivering communications strategies for major property and financial institutions, including Barclays and BNP Paribas Real Estate, particularly during periods of growth and transformation.

Jane Hutchins has also stepped into the role of Director of External Affairs. She will continue to represent Cambridge Science Park externally while leading programmes designed to accelerate innovation and support the growth of science, technology and deep-tech ventures across the Park’s wider ecosystem.

In addition, Cambridge Science Park confirmed that a Senior Director of Development and Operations will be appointed shortly. This role will be central to delivering the estate masterplans, shaping a coherent, phased approach to development that brings the Park’s long-term vision to life.

Jamie Trivedi-Bateman, Director of Investment for Trinity College Cambridge, said the appointments would help realise the institution’s long-term ambitions for the Park. He said the strengthened leadership team would ensure Cambridge Science Park continues to play a leading role in supporting the next generation of science and technology innovation in Cambridge and across the UK.

Founded more than 50 years ago by Trinity College Cambridge, Cambridge Science Park was Europe’s original science park and remains the UK’s longest established and one of its largest. Today, it is home to more than 7,000 innovators, with resident companies whose work ranges from medical treatments and smartphone technologies to sustainable materials made from pea protein.
