The Marlowe Trust (the Trust) is seeking to commission specialist technical project management services (the Services) for the Heritage Fund Delivery Phase of the Poor Priests Hospital project in Canterbury, Kent (the Project).
The Trust would welcome submissions from organisations who would undertake the work as a commissioned contract as well as individuals who are seeking an employment contract and would become a member of staff.

The project

The Project will repair and repurpose the 800-year old Grade I Listed Poor Priest’s Hospital, creating a new learning centre, The Hive, alongside a heritage destination and café space.
The project will repair and repurpose the historic Poor Priests’ Hospital, creating a new heritage destination for Canterbury, with a creative learning centre for young people at its heart. The project utilises the building’s significant physical and cultural heritage to create a beautiful, inspiring space for young people to flourish and an engaging and welcoming space for visitors.

The role

The technical project manager will be responsible for developing, maintaining and taking overall management of a detailed programme for the capital works ensuring that the capital project is delivered on time and to budget.

The Trust see this role as being embedded within the Marlowe Trust staff team including working from the Trust’s offices for two days per week. The Marlowe Trust is a large and dynamic organisation managing a busy theatre with a high turnover of events and a significant outreach programme. It is vital that the appointed technical project manager is embedded within this environment to ensure the Poor Priests’ Hospital project reflects the Trust’s various ambitions and practical requirements.

The overall coordination of the Heritage Fund project (capital and activities) will be undertaken by the Marlowe Trust’s Executive Director and external Project Coordinators.

The successful supplier will report to the Executive Director and liaise with a Core Team comprising advisors, external consultants and staff from the Marlowe Trust.

Kensal Green Cemetery is at the start of an exciting new chapter in its history. After several years of hard work and collaboration with stakeholders such as Historic England, in November 2025 the General Cemetery Act passed into law enabling the General Cemetery Company, which owns and operates the site, to transfer the land, buildings and company into a newly formed charity.

An application has now been submitted to the Charity Commission to establish the Kensal Green Cemetery Trust and the transfer is planned for later in 2026. This milestone will finally liberate the Cemetery from its historic governance arrangements and result in it being owned and operated by a modern organisation with contemporary powers and freedoms. It will mark the end of several years of coordinated specialist work and the beginning of a sustainable future for the Cemetery.

In anticipation of the new charity being formed the General Cemetery Company established a Steering Group in 2025 and recruited three external members with expertise in finance, heritage architecture, landscape and ecology. Alongside an initial cohort of four company Directors, this group will become the inaugural Board of Trustees for the new charity once it is established.

The Steering Group has been up and running for nearly a year now and the next step is recruit a second wave of new trustees. The Steering Group is therefore seeking to appoint three further external individuals over the next few months to complete the new Board of Trustees.
