⭐️ WHAT I’M WORKING ON ⭐️

It’s often difficult for me to talk about what I’m working on because much of it is confidential, but I thought it would be good to give you a flavour:

➡️ Supporting a business to prepare for a departmental restructure, guiding them on process and steps needed;

➡️ Carrying out an independent grievance investigation for a business;

➡️ Doing a mediation session between two employees to improve their working relationship;

➡️ Supporting the owner of a growing business to put together a People Strategy and getting involved in implementation of actions;

➡️ Arranging a meeting to discuss feedback from a series of HR clinics for another client and agree an action plan.

I LOVE the variety of my job, no two days are the same and most of all, I love that I can help businesses in lots of different ways when it comes to people!

⭐️ What do you love about what you do? I’d love to know! 👇🏻

➡️ How can I help you?

Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen an increase in the amount of work I’m getting contacted for from my clients, so I thought it might be good to let you know the kinds of things I can support you with in relation to your people…

Here’s a snapshot of what I’m doing right now:

⭐️ Designing management training sessions to be rolled out over the next 12 months;

⭐️ Advice on implementing hybrid working into organisations and how best to make it work with their culture;

⭐️ Supporting new businesses with employing their first people;

⭐️ Advice on a range of people problems from performance, sickness absence, disciplinary, and (unfortunately) dismissal;

⭐️ Designing HR workflows and providing supporting document templates;

⭐️ Supporting businesses through change, restructures and mergers (including the TUPE process).

Phew! It’s a lot and it’s great to see businesses at all sorts of stages engaging with the people elements to make it work in the best way possible.

Whether you’re looking for one-off, ad hoc, or ongoing HR support then I’d love to help you!

⭐️ How do you build effective teams remotely?

Now that things are (hopefully) opening up again, you’re probably looking at your hybrid working arrangements.

You’ve got your procedures and the logistics sorted, but have you thought about how often you’ll bring people together as a team in future?

My advice to my clients is that there will be a need for more regular team events.

Whereas in the past, you might have had team events either 6 or 12 months, I think that moving to having shorter, more focused events every 3 or 4 months.

The benefits include:

➡️ fostering a sense of team

➡️ encouraging collaboration

➡️ combating isolation and loneliness

➡️ allowing working relationships to develop (especially if people have started during lockdown)

➡️ allowing some social catch up time

…all of which are great ways to support employee engagement 🙌🏻

➡️ How often will you be getting your teams together in the hybrid working world?

➡️ How do you know what the outcome of managing people problems will be? ⬅️

The truth is, I don’t! 😦

Managers often come to me for advice with a particular outcome in mind, and whilst it’s good to know, my focus is on the step in front of us…

People situations are inherently unpredictable. Confronting a difficult issue like poor performance, misconduct, a grievance, sickness absence can mean that the employee reacts in a number of ways.

They could go off sick, put a formal grievance in, resign, or even just refuse to communicate.

That can be hard to navigate as a business owner.

My job is to help you manage whatever happens, step-by-step, to end up with the best result for the employee and the business 🙌🏻

If you’ve got people problems and you’d like help with where to start resolving them, DM me and let’s chat it through!

Developing and mentoring managers is a big part of the work I do with businesses of all sizes...

This manager had the double-whammy of being brand new to management whilst covering maternity leave AND then suddenly having to managing the team remotely when the pandemic hit 😱

When we met, she was a bit overwhelmed and the business owner agreed that she’d benefit from some support, so we started having weekly 121 sessions…

Fast-forward a few months and here’s what she has to say! 🙂

Seeing people progress and their ability in managing people increase is incredibly satisfying and I LOVE equipping people with the skills to be able to confidently manage their teams 🙌🏻

If you’d like to give your managers some additional support then drop me a DM and let’s chat!

⭐️ “Never doubt yourself if someone else thinks you can do the job” ⭐️

I saw this quote when I was researching a talk on Imposter Syndrome about a year ago, and it really resonated with me...

Not only because it totally sums up one of the biggest ways we can overcome the feeling that we’re not good enough, but also because it has pretty much summed up my career and freelance journey so far...

I’ve been fortunate enough to have people that have believed in me enough to develop me and refer me and that’s one of the main things that has helped me to progress.

I’m passionate about paying that forward and it’s such a powerful leadership behaviour:

➡️ demonstrating your belief and confidence in other people ⬅️
..that it’s also something I speak to my clients about instilling it as part of their business culture 🙌🏻

➡️ What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given that has stuck with you?

❓How have you been dealing with virtually on-boarding new staff?

Whilst hybrid/flexible working seems to be the preference for people, it’s important to think about how you’ll approach recruiting and inducting new employees as we move into a new working world...

And whatever it looks like for your business, it’s likely that more of the process will be virtual and online in future.

On-boarding remotely is different, it requires a well thought out induction process, and you may also need to slow the pace of information down to allow people to absorb it.

I’d recommend enabling a buddy system so that people can build relationships and support is available from an identified place.

Remote line management skills are also a crucial thing to have in place to ensure your teams are managed well and that issues are identified and resolved early.

➡️ What’s worked well for you when on-boarding new staff remotely? I’d love to know!👇🏻

⭐️ C O N F I D E N C E ⭐️

It’s a small word, but it’s one of the main things I work with business owners and managers to develop...

The tricky thing with people issues is that it’s difficult to predict when they’ll come up.

You might not have to manage any problems in your team and then all of a sudden, you need those skills and you’ve forgotten what you should be doing.

I work with businesses in two ways to increase your confidence in managing people problems:

➡️ 1. Management training courses.

Proactively up-skilling your managers with the knowledge and information, and keeping them updated with employment law that’s relevant to them is an important part of building management confidence.

These courses can be delivered on a range of topics, from management basics, to focusing on specific subjects like managing performance, disciplinary, and sickness absence.

➡️ 2. Working by your side through people problems to guide and support you at every stage.

I’ll coach you through what’s needed and will be with you at meetings to support the process and to ensure everything is covered appropriately.

How do you feel about managing people problems? Let me know! 👇🏻
