COULD YOUR HOME QUALIFY FOR FUNDED ENERGY IMPROVEMENTS?

The Warm Homes: Local Grant is designed to help eligible households in England improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

For some properties, that can include solar panels.

Eligibility depends on both the household and the property. Homes will generally need an EPC rating of D, E, F or G, with qualifying households meeting the relevant income, benefits or postcode criteria.

If eligible, the home is assessed to understand which improvements are appropriate.

That could include solar panels, insulation, air source heat pumps or heating controls.

The important point is that this is not simply a "free solar" scheme.

The work offered depends on the property, its current energy performance and what the assessment identifies as the right improvements.

For households that qualify, the scheme could provide a route to making the home more energy efficient and gaining greater control over energy use.

Solar panels generate the electricity. Battery storage gives you more control over when you use it. 🔋☀️

This RM3 installation uses a Fox ESS battery storage system alongside a Fox ESS inverter, creating a more connected home-energy setup.

So what does the battery actually do?

During the day, solar can power the home while surplus generation can be stored in the battery rather than immediately sent back to the grid.

Then, when solar generation drops later in the day, that stored energy can be used around the home before more electricity needs to be bought from the grid.

Depending on the system, tariff and how it is configured, battery storage can also be used to charge during cheaper off-peak periods and release that energy when electricity is more expensive.

That is why getting the battery size right matters.

Bigger is not automatically better. Storage should be designed around the household’s electricity use, the amount of solar being generated, tariffs, peak demand and future plans such as an EV or heat pump.

With compatible Fox ESS systems, homeowners can also monitor solar generation, household consumption, battery charging and discharging, and grid imports and exports through the FoxCloud app.

Same roof. A very different job to do. ☀️

A before and after from one of our latest solar installations in UB8.

This system uses Eurener solar panels, mounted with a Clenergy system chosen to suit the property and roof layout.

What starts as an ordinary roof becomes part of the home’s energy system, helping the household generate more of its own electricity and reduce how much it needs to buy from the grid.

But the transformation you see here is only the final part.

Every installation starts with the property itself: available roof space, orientation, shading, structure and how the household actually uses energy.

The system is then designed around those details, with the panels and mounting solution selected to suit the job.

A few days ago, we shared why this 3.8° roof needed a different approach to solar. Here’s the finished result. ☀️

This WV3 installation is now complete, with 14 Eurener solar panels installed using a suitable Renusol Europe GmbH mounting solution for the low-slope roof.

With flat and low-slope roofs, it isn’t just about finding space for the panels.

The roof structure, additional load from the mounting system and wind loading all need to be considered as part of the design. Where ballast is used, that added weight also has to be accounted for.

It’s a good example of why solar should be designed around the property in front of you, rather than treated as a standard one-size-fits-all install.

Flat roof? Solar can still be a practical option. ☀️

Not every solar installation needs to involve fixing directly through the roof.

For suitable flat-roof properties, a ballasted mounting system can provide a secure way to position solar panels while avoiding unnecessary penetrations through the roof covering.

This installation uses a Renusol Europe GmbH mounting solution, with the system designed around the property, roof structure and site conditions rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

It’s a good example of why solar design should start with the home itself, not simply the number of panels that can fit on the roof.

What does MCS certification actually mean for your solar installation? ☀️

It’s more than a logo on a website.

MCS sets recognised standards around installer competence, system design, installation, commissioning and the documentation you receive when the work is complete.

For the customer, that means greater confidence that the system going onto your home has been designed and installed within an independently recognised quality framework.

It also matters after installation. An MCS certificate, or an accepted equivalent, is normally required when applying for Smart Export Guarantee payments for electricity exported back to the grid.

Who said solar panels have to go on the roof? ☀️

For some homes, the best available space might actually be a wall.

This REST installation shows how vertically mounted solar can make use of suitable wall space when roof area is limited, already in use or simply not the best option for the property.

The same principles still matter: orientation, shading, structure and, importantly, choosing the right mounting system.

Flat roof or pitched roof? The answer matters more than you might think. ☀️

This roof has a measured pitch of around 3.8°.

It might look slightly pitched, but under UK solar installation standards it falls within the definition of a flat roof.

Why does that matter?

Because even a few degrees can change how the panels need to be mounted. Roof pitch, surface, wind loading and structure all influence the right system for the property.

For low-slope roofs like this, compatible mounting solutions from can allow the array to be installed using a suitable flat-roof system, subject to the correct design and structural calculations.

What really matters when something doesn't go exactly to plan?

This REST installation in UB9 is still a work in progress, and it's a good example of what we mean by accountable support.

The solar installation is underway, but the battery supplied for the project arrived faulty. Rather than leaving the customer waiting or chasing for answers, we've arranged the replacement and our installers are due back on Friday to complete the battery swap and install the EV charger.

It's all part of what we call the Complete Energy Package.

Eurener Solar. Duracell / Fox ESS / Growatt New Energy Battery storage. Duracell / myenergi EV charging. The right access and scaffolding to complete the work properly. And, just as importantly, a team that takes ownership when something needs putting right.

Because a home energy system is a long-term investment. We don't believe our responsibility should end when the panels are fitted.
