A work breakdown structure (WBS) is a chart in which the critical work elements, called tasks, of a project are illustrated to portray their relationships to each other and to the project as a whole. The graphical nature of the WBS can help a project manager predict outcomes based on various scenarios, which can ensure that optimum decisions are made about whether or not to adopt suggested procedures or changes.

Earned Value Management asks the question, "How is the Project Progressing"?

The Scheduled Performance Index (SPI) is a number from -1 to +1 that calculates planned progress versus actual progress.

Less than 1 (e.g. 0.8) means work is behind schedule. Greater than 1 means it is ahead.

The Cost Performance Index (CPI) also summarises Project performance but in terms of budget.

Less than 1 and the value of the work is less than the money spent.

Greater than 1 and the value created is greater than the budgeted spend.
