One thing (among many!) in the Children’s Social Care Reset Implementation Plan genuinely unsettled me: the proposal to pilot a Single Unique Identifier for every child in children’s social care.
I understand the reasoning behind it. Better information-sharing. Better safeguarding. Better coordination between services.
But as someone who was once in care myself, I can’t help feeling deeply uncomfortable about reducing vulnerable children to trackable system identities rather than seeing them first and foremost as human beings.
Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but isn’t a child’s name and date of birth already enough of an identifier?
Children are not barcodes or datasets. They are human beings.
