You get to be good friends with fellow fingerpost enthusiasts and this is exactly what happened when I was contacted by the man who lives next to this post in Somerset. Sir Robert Hill had been annually maintaining 'his post' and was horror stricken when the Norton St Phillip finger went missing in 2018.
Hence he commissioned me to cast a replacement but then cancelled when a local contractor turned up with the missing finger to weld it back into place.
But my friendship with Sir Bob & Lady Debby was cemented and last week I made my third trip down to Laverton, all the way from Cumbria, and this time I carried out the annual service of the fingerpost in Bob's memory as he passed away in January this year at 88.
All it needed is a good wash & brush up.

A lot of interest in this restoration being completed today in Stamfordham. Northumberland. A historical society, the local MP, the PC chairman, two reps from the Milestone Society and interested villagers all in attendance.
It's a good job the students on the CPRE Northumberland fingerpost restoration course got it right, and they certainly did. Well done to them all and look out for their handiwork being featured in the future.
