The going is the easy part. It is the coming home that catches people out.

Big Feastival starts today over at Kingham, the bank holiday runs through to Monday, and half the county has something on. Roads round Chipping Norton and the villages either side will be busy from this afternoon.

Monday evening is the one to think about though. Everybody travels back at the same time, cars are loaded heavier than they went out, and drivers are tired in a way they do not always notice until they are sat in a queue. That combination is where a decent weekend turns into a long night.

So take your time on the way home. Set off a bit earlier or a bit later than everyone else if you can. And if the car has been sat on a field all weekend, give it a minute before you ask anything of it.

Last bank holiday until Christmas, so make the most of it. We will be on right through, same as always, if it goes sideways.

Nobody has a nice day when they need us.

A recovery job sits inside somebody's bad night. The car has died, the plans have gone, and most people quite reasonably want to put the whole thing behind them and never think about it again.

Which is why it always surprises us when someone goes home and writes about it.

One from June stuck with us. A car lost power after dark and left the driver stranded out in the middle of nowhere. By the time the job reached us it was clear a bigger vehicle was needed, and the man who took that call was already on his way home. He turned round, was with them inside the hour, and had a fair idea what the fault was before he had finished loading.

That is a normal shift for us. Sitting down the next morning to write about it is not normal at all, and it means more than people realise.

So thank you. To everyone who has taken ten minutes to say something about a day they would rather forget.

Most people know what happens when we turn up. Almost nobody knows what happens after.

The car goes on the truck and gets taken somewhere. That is the bit everyone pictures. What catches people out is that the somewhere is a decision, and it is usually yours to make while you are stood at the side of a road feeling rattled.

So it helps to have thought about it before you ever need to. Do you want it at your own garage, and do you know the name of it. Is it going home. If your insurer or breakdown cover is involved, they may already have a place in mind, and that is worth knowing before you are asked.

The other thing to sort out on the spot is you. The vehicle goes one way and you might be going another, so take what you actually need out of it. Phone, charger, keys, wallet, medication, anything for the kids. Have a proper look in the boot and the door pockets, because going back for a forgotten bag is a nuisance for everyone.

None of this is complicated. It is just far easier to think about now than it is at half seven on a wet Tuesday.

You do not need recovery experience to do this job. You need the licence.

That catches a lot of people out. Drivers assume there is some separate qualification, or years on the trucks they have not done, and talk themselves out of applying before they have picked up the phone.

What you actually need is a C or C+E category licence, a valid Driver CPC, a digital tachograph card, and no more than six penalty points. That is the list.

The recovery side gets taught. First few months you will be learning how a vehicle behaves on a bed, how to read a scene before you commit to anything, and how to work out the safest way to shift something that does not want to be shifted. You pick it up alongside people who have been doing it for years.

What comes with it: 28 days holiday, a workplace pension, and a company vehicle while you are on shift.

Your satnav might still be sending you towards a road that is not there any more.

The old stretch of the A417 by the Air Balloon has been permanently closed to through traffic. Traffic now runs on a temporary route between the Brockworth junction and the old Cowley roundabout. Narrower lanes, a 40mph limit, and one lane in each direction between Brockworth and the Air Balloon roundabout.

The official advice is worth repeating. Follow the signs on the road rather than the voice on your phone. Signs change the day the road changes. Map data does not always keep pace.

It matters more than it sounds. When drivers lose confidence in a route they start improvising, and the lanes and villages round there were never built to take that sort of traffic.

Allow yourself more time than usual and most of the stress goes out of it.

Most cars tell you they are about to break down. The problem is we are all quite good at not listening.

The squeal that only happens when you first set off. The warm smell after a long run. The dashboard light that came on, went off again, and gave you permission to forget about it. The steering that feels slightly heavier than it did last month.

None of those are emergencies on their own. That is exactly why they get ignored. You are busy, the car still starts, and you tell yourself you will look at it at the weekend.

Then it fails somewhere inconvenient, usually with a boot full of shopping or a school run to do.

If your car has been doing something new for a fortnight, that is the point to get it looked at. Not when it stops.

A quick word with a garage costs you an hour. A breakdown on the A40 costs you a lot more than that.

And if you left it a bit late, we are here every day of the year.

There is a bit of this job nobody photographs.

We turn up to a lot of jobs where someone has already stopped. Not a mechanic, not anyone official. Just a driver who saw a car on the verge with the hazards going and pulled in where it was safe to.

Sometimes they have lent a phone charger. Sometimes they have put the kettle on because the breakdown happened outside their house. Quite often they have just stood there and kept someone company, because waiting on your own at the side of a road is a horrible feeling and they knew that.

They are usually gone before we have finished loading. No name, no fuss.
We see it more round here than you might expect. It is one of the better things about working in this part of the world.

So if you have ever been that person, thank you. And if you have ever been the one waiting, you will know exactly why it matters.

That is it. Tick those four and you can do this job.

Here is what comes back the other way. 28 days holiday. A workplace pension. A company vehicle while you are on shift. And a job where no two days look the same, working across the Cotswolds with a team that has been doing this since 2006.

The rest of it does not fit on a form anyway. Turning up. Staying calm while someone else is having the worst morning of their week. Knowing the roads well enough to find a car down a lane with no name on it.

Charlbury is about to get very busy.

Wilderness is on at Cornbury Park from now until Sunday, which means thousands of cars heading down roads that were never built for that sort of traffic. Anyone local already knows what that looks like.

The lanes round Charlbury and Finstock will be slower than usual for the next few days, and there will be a fair few drivers following a satnav that has no idea what it is sending them into. A bit of patience at the passing places goes a long way this weekend.

If you are heading to the festival, follow the yellow event signs rather than your phone. They exist for a reason, and they keep the traffic out of the village.

And if something does go wrong, on the way there or the long drive home on Sunday, we are just up the road and we are on all weekend.

Most job adverts tell you what they want from you.

This one's going to tell you what the job actually looks like.

You'll start a shift not knowing what's coming. Could be a flat battery in a supermarket car park.
Could be a van that's slid off a wet lane at six in the morning with a driver who's cold, fed up and just wants to get to work.

You'll work with kit that does something. You'll fix problems that are right in front of you, not sat in an inbox. And at the end of the day, you'll have actually helped someone, not just talked about it in a meeting.

We're looking for a 7.5T HGV Recovery Driver to join our teams in Carterton and Highworth. You'll need a C or C+E category licence, a valid Driver CPC and Digital Tachograph card, and no more than six points on your licence. Some mechanical knowledge helps but isn't essential.

In return, you get a company vehicle on shift, 28 days holiday including bank holidays, a workplace pension, and a team of over 70 vehicles behind you.
