Some days, even we have to stand back and think, "How on earth has that ended up there?"

A car stuck in a ditch. A vehicle stranded down a narrow country lane. Or something that's ended up at an angle nobody would have thought possible.

That's the thing about vehicle recovery. You never quite know what the next call is going to bring.

And around the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire, we've certainly got our fair share of roads that like to keep drivers on their toes.

Some jobs are straightforward. Others take a bit more planning, the right equipment and a good understanding of how to get a vehicle out safely without making the situation worse.

It's all part of the job, and it's why experience and local knowledge matter.

A wet leaf on tarmac behaves a lot like ice, and hardly anyone drives like it does.

They sit there a few days, get a bit of traffic over them, and break down into a film on the road surface. Under a shaded stretch where the sun never reaches, that film stays slick for weeks.

You can guess where it catches people. A bend under trees, or the dip at the bottom of a hill where everything washes down to.

Brake earlier than feels necessary and get it done before the bend rather than in it. Keep the steering smooth. If the back steps out, ease off and look where you want to go, not at the hedge.

We pull cars off the same half dozen corners every autumn. Speed's rarely the cause. It's usually somebody braking at the exact moment the road stopped gripping.

Drivers don’t stay in a job because of the truck.

They stay because of who’s in the yard when they get back, and whether the bloke on the radio at two in the morning actually knows what he’s on about.

We run out of Carterton and Highworth, 70 plus vehicles, at it since 2006. Some of the lads have been here years, which probably tells you more than anything we could write.

To join them you need a C or C+E category licence, a valid Driver CPC, a digital tachograph card, and no more than six penalty points. You’d get 28 days holiday, a workplace pension, and a company vehicle while you’re on shift.

The flails are out. Your tyres are about to find out.

Hedge cutting gets going properly once nesting season’s over, and every trimmed lane round here ends up with blackthorn and hawthorn scattered across it. Sharp stuff, and more of it points upwards than you’d like.

It sits there for days too. Long enough that when you get a slow puncture on the Tuesday you’ve completely forgotten the tractor you squeezed past on Friday.

Hang back if you’re following a cutter and give the lane a minute to settle. Then have a look at your tyres when you get home, because a thorn in the tread doesn’t always go down straight away and a slow puncture picks its moment.

Check the spare while you’re down there. That’s the one nobody looks at until they’re stood in the rain needing it.

Things people have actually said to us on the phone.

"I'm on a road." ...Brilliant.

"Next to a field with some sheep in it." Also a strong contender round here.

"By the pub" is the one that gets us though (We love it)

We have heard the lot and we don't mind, because being lost is half the reason people ring us.
Postcode's a mile out, hedges all look the same after dark, and somehow we find you anyway.

Best ones are when somebody describes a farm gate, a bend and a broken sign, and the driver goes "oh I know exactly where that is" before they've finished the sentence.

Go on then.

See one deer, slow right down. There's never just one.

The rut's on now, so they'll be moving about far more than usual right through to December. Worst of it lines up with the drive home. Sunset through to midnight, then again around sunrise.

Round here that means the wooded stretches. Wychwood, the lanes towards Cornbury, anywhere the trees come right up to the verge. No warning at all, they're just there.

Whatever you do, don't swerve. Every instinct tells you to get out of the way, but a car that swerves at 50, ends up in oncoming traffic or wrapped round a tree.

Brake hard and hold the wheel straight. Stay in your lane.

If you do hit one, pull up somewhere safe, hazards on, and leave the animal be.

An injured deer is a lot stronger and a lot more frightened than people expect.

She has got a bit of a look about her, hasn't she. Like she has been called out at 4am once too often and is not letting it go.

The real one is out across the Cotswolds right now, considerably less dramatic and considerably more useful.

You only ever meet one of us. The voice on the phone.

There is a control room behind that, running 24 hours, and it is where the actual work starts. Somebody takes the call, works out where you really are rather than where you think you are, decides what is needed to shift your vehicle, and finds the nearest person capable of doing it.

That last bit is harder than it sounds. A car on a driveway and a car halfway into a hedge on a single track lane are two completely different jobs, needing two different vehicles. Send the wrong one and everybody waits twice.

So when we ask what feels like a lot of questions while you are stood at the side of a road in the cold, that is why. What you tell us in the first two minutes decides how long you are stood there.

Landmarks help. Field gates, pub names, a farm entrance, the last village sign you went past. Anything beats nothing.
