If you remember witnesses were telling the House of Lords Committee that:

“…a key barrier was “not knowing what was available from social care”: his local authority gave him “very little support” and he had to rely instead on advice from charities and others who were more familiar with the system. He told us: “It was a chasm of the unknown”.”

In 2021/22, people made 2m requests for adult social care support to English local authorities. 8% of those requests resulted in long-term support being provided and a further 12% resulted in short-term support. The remaining 80% of requests were not granted access to, or were not suited to mainstream adult social care services - 20% of these requests weren’t even signposted to universal services…

It literally is a chasm of the unknown.

So, is it time to reconsider a role for User-led Organisations (ULO)?

The thing to say about providing peer support is that if just over 1 in 38 of all older adults in England are actually receiving care at home at the minute, unless you attend a day centre, is it likely that you’ll talk to someone else who is receiving care? Probably not and even less so if your mobility is an issue.
