Fylde coast health firm creates £17.5m social value

Fylde social enterprise company Spiral Health is said to create £17.5m worth of financial value each year, according to an independent study.

Bispham-based Spiral Health CIC, which provides services to support NHS Trusts and runs two hospitals at Bispham and Rossall, is said to generate a return of £3.63 for every £1 invested according to the Make It Happen consultancy.
It said Spiral Health’s NHS savings are measured through its care of vulnerable adults treated at its units in the North West, freeing up resources in the NHS as its care focused on rehabilitation, reducing social care reliance, the need for community nursing and building independence.

More than 1,000 people were treated at its nurse led therapy units in the past year, providing 17,628 rehabilitation bed nights each year, saving the NHS £7.8m.
It said this helped to reduce A&E attendance by over £7m. The need for hospital day cases within local hospitals was reduced, saving £228k.

It helped to reduce A&E attendance costs by over £7m cut hospital day cases within local hospitals saving £228k and its physiotherapy to improve a person’s mobility and independence cut care costs by £2.7m.

Tracey Bush, CEO of Spiral Health said Make It Happen had helped Spiral in 2012 when the company was starting out and its research helped focus its community involvement.
She said: “The ethos of Spiral Health and our goal when we were established as a Social Enterprise was to help the NHS use its resources as effectively as possible, to reduce pressure on acute wards and focus on a person-centred care than encouraged independent living for as long as possible.

“The Social Value report in 2015 shows we are saving the NHS a sizeable sum, allowing resources to be used on frontline emergency care while supporting our local economy”.
Spiral, which employs 121 had a turnover for the year ending March 2015 of just under £5m.
In 2014/15 Spiral Health has supported 1,171 patients, with 808 in 2015 so far.
