Last year, the US energy sector saw a rise in roles within green energy, including offshore wind.

The US Energy and Employment Jobs Report found that clean energy jobs grew by 3.9% nationally in 2022, adding 114,000 jobs to the sector.

At least 5,416 ended up in wind, with employment in the portion of the industry building offshore turbines surging by more than 20%.

Manning, recruitment and training obstacles can delay or derail projects, especially during the early phases. Because of the wide range of roles and skilled personnel required to plan, design, build and maintain offshore wind farms, staffing plays a key role in the success of any project.

The UK and the Netherlands are set to collaborate on the world's largest multi-use electricity power line, called LionLink, which will connect the two countries and offshore wind farms in the North Sea.

The project, developed by Britain's National Grid and Dutch electricity network operator TenneT, will provide green electricity to 1.8 million homes and be operational by the early 2030s.

With a capacity of 1.8GW, LionLink will be able to move enough surplus energy between countries to power Birmingham and Manchester combined. Close collaboration on offshore wind energy among North Sea countries is pivotal to continued growth of the sector.

The project will connect the two countries to each other and to offshore wind farms in the North Sea and is scheduled to go into operation "by the early 2030s".

What do wind technicians do?

Wind technicians are trained to install, commission, service, fault find, inspect, and repair turbines. They often specialise in one turbine manufacturer but can often work on various aspects of the turbine tasks throughout the lifecycle of the turbines and projects.

Do you see yourself in such a role? What education is required to become a wind or solar technician?

Recruits often require training in electrical and mechanical systems and engineering, applied physics, GRP lamination, data and communication.

There's a high demand for workers at utility-scale wind and solar farms. Many companies will hire and train people with no experience in the field.

UK oil and gas workers are demanding a just transition to renewable energy jobs as the country aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

With the oil and gas industry contributing significantly to the UK economy, workers are calling for a just transition fund to provide financial support for those who lose their jobs due to the shift, as well as training and education in renewable energy.

The UK government's £16 billion plan to create 250,000 jobs in low-carbon industries has been welcomed by workers.

Their demand for training and education in renewable energy is driven by the fact that many workers have skills and experience that could be suitable for jobs in wind, solar, and other renewable energy sectors. This demand for transition to renewable energy jobs could be a solution to the shortage of skilled workers in the offshore wind industry.

⚠️ Offshore Wind Workers Concession Update ⚠️

We have now received confirmation that the Offshore Wind Workers Concession will end on 30 April 2023 and will not be extended.

Workers for which the Concession previously applied will need to leave the UK by 30 April 2023. If they wish to work in the UK, they will need to apply for an entry clearance before they start work.

The Skilled Worker route is likely to be the most suitable route for non-UK Nationals working in Offshore Wind.

Starting on 12th April 2023, offshore workers (or their sponsor if they have one), defined under 11A of the Immigration Act 1971, as inserted by Section 43 of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 (NABA), will need to notify the Home Office when they arrive in the UK (that is, arrives in UK waters for the purpose of undertaking work in those waters) and when they leave. This is a requirement under 11B of Section 43 of the NABA.

The sponsor of an offshore worker will be responsible for fulfilling the notification requirement. The notification must be made no earlier than the day of arrival/leaving and no later than 10 working days after arrival/leaving.
