I get it. You don’t have any HR issues at the moment. You only have a couple of employees, it’s all ticking away quite nicely…

A couple of questions…

❓Do you have the legally required policies in place?
❓Do your employees all have contracts?
❓Have you completed right to work checks for each employee?
❓Have you got policies in place to enable you to deal with issues as they arise?

Service led businesses rely on their people to represent their brand and deliver their services directly to their clients. They don’t have a “sexy” product to hide behind, they’re not luxury brands, and their services don’t tend to be unique - so if they want to grow and maintain their client base, they need their people to deliver, every time.

I know you’ve all been eagerly awaiting the launch of the new website… Humour me, please! 🙏🏻😂

It’s taken a lot of thought and hard work to create something a web designer could have created in about half an hour, but you can now find the answers to all those questions, such as:

Partnerships are what it’s all about…

This morning I caught up with the lovely Niki Dole so much to catch up on as always, and great to share our experiences of “going it alone”, the highs and lows, what works, what doesn’t, and how we can partner with each other going forward… more on that another day!

After a quick pit stop to give my littlest partner a cuddle (poorly toddler), this afternoon was spent completing my Partner training with Breathe and I am delighted to share that I am now an Accredited BreatheHR Partner. I look forward to sharing how I will be building BreatheHR software into the services I offer, very soon!

One of the things I love about being an independent HR Consultant is the flexibility I have to choose who I partner with, to work with people and businesses that I believe in, and whose vision and values align with my own. There’s no greater feeling than finding that fit 🧡

Beautiful morning spent being at one with nature 🍃🌳

My best ideas come to me when I’m outside, it’s been like turning a tap on recently, I can’t keep up with myself!

There is something about the peace and tranquillity of woodland and water that gives a sense of perspective, and makes anything seem possible. I’m sure I’m not alone?

So I’ve decided that going forward, any client review or strategy meetings will come with the option to get outside. If you’re Essex based, we can enjoy the wonderful country parks we’re blessed with, and meet face to face… if you’re not, we’ll get outside regardless - they’re called “mobiles” for a reason!

What do think, good idea? Or shall we just stay indoors? ⬇️⬇️

I should’ve outsourced it.

My website. Oh my goodness. I’ve been a little bit quiet this week as I’ve been completely engrossed in doing something which is way outside my skill set… 🤯

The result - well, it’s not finished and it’s taken far longer than it should have done… BUT, I am actually quite pleased with what I’ve achieved. A professional undoubtedly could have done a better job, it’s not perfect, but it’s not going to land me in any trouble either… so fingers crossed, ready to launch next week - and the next time it needs a refresh, it’s getting outsourced - lesson learned!👍🏻

As a business owner, or leader, how often do you come across a People issue, start to deal with it, and all of a sudden think “sh*t, I’m in too deep” - or you don’t deal with it, because you don’t feel confident enough and then it snowballs? Trust me, you’re not alone - it happens a lot.

People issues can be tricky to navigate and if it goes horribly wrong, unlike my amateur website, it could land you in a bit (or a lot) of bother…

My advice? Do as I say, not as I do - outsource it!

Invest in some commercially focused, high quality HR advice and let the experts guide you to the best possible outcome for your business.

A common question people have about working from home with young children – how do you juggle it? Can you still be “present” for your clients? Are you fully committed to your clients?

There is a common misconception that if someone has young children at home, and is also working from home, that they must be distracted, not fully committed, working in chaos with screaming children in the background, tripping over toys and covered in something sticky at all times… not so. At least not for me…

A sneak peak behind the scenes at Legon HQ will show you that I am firm believer in…

🏠 Tidy house, tidy mind.

👦 Organised childcare, and back up childcare (because let’s face it, kids are ill A LOT), for when it really matters e.g. F2F meetings, Teams meetings, scheduled calls, or tight deadlines.

🕰️ Dedicated time slots throughout the day for responding to phone and email queries, which enable me to focus on my kids when they need me, and also ensure my clients get a rapid response.

💪🏻Knowing what works best for me and knowing what I need to do to ensure I deliver!

How much time does your business spend managing formal Grievances? 🤔

How much time and money are wasted on lost productivity due to issues in working relationships? 🕰️ 💰

My top tip to address this…

🔥BURN. YOUR. GRIEVANCE. POLICY. 🔥

🛑 Stop expecting to see positive change from a process which focusses on the negative, and encourages each party to become entrenched in their own position, rather than focussing on finding a positive way forward.

OR (less dramatically)…

- change it to focus on positive ways to resolve conflict in the workplace,

- communicate these changes,

- talk about these changes,

-challenge managers and individuals to engage in meaningful, honest conversation,

-provide the tools to enable these changes.

If you’re not up for burning your Grievance Policy (and honestly, you really shouldn’t, it has its place), but you like the idea of fostering a more proactive and positive culture of conflict resolution – start with a simple policy update and comms plan. If you’d like some suggested wording for your Grievance Policy, DM me with your email address and I’ll pop it over!

A beautiful start to the day in sunny Chelmsford ☀️

Up and out this morning to catch up with a former client who has moved businesses, to discuss all things HR and to share with them some of my business ideas for the future!

Setting my own agenda, and deciding how and where to focus my energies, is one of the greatest benefits of doing what I do, but what is the best thing about being an independent HR Consultant? For me, it’s the variety of challenges that I help small businesses to overcome, and the varied nature of the businesses themselves.

I’ve worked across different industries dealing with complex Employee Relations cases, I’ve delivered HR systems, I’ve provided bespoke HR documentation to countless businesses, and offered commercially focused advice on a retained basis to several clients. I support local Employment Lawyers with client ER cases, and act as an escalation point for other HR Consultants. Here’s what some of them have had to say….
