You are working as a security officer at a busy site when a member of staff approaches you.

They tell you that they have noticed an unfamiliar person inside a restricted area of the building. The person is wearing a high-visibility jacket and appears confident, so nobody has challenged them.

You locate the individual, who tells you they are a contractor — but they cannot provide identification, sign-in details or confirmation of who they are working for.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐖𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐎 𝐍𝐄𝐗𝐓?

Would you:

Crime can happen at any time of day or night. While darkness can provide criminals with additional cover, many incidents take place during normal business hours when buildings are busy, staff are distracted, and unusual activity can be harder to spot.

Criminals often look for opportunities rather than waiting for nightfall.

Common opportunities can include:

● Busy reception areas – Unauthorised individuals may blend in with visitors and staff.

● Shift changes – Busy handovers can create moments when entrances and access points receive less attention.

● Deliveries and collections – Open doors and frequent visitors can provide opportunities for unauthorised access.

● Open or unsecured fire exits – Fire exits must remain accessible for safety, but they should also be appropriately monitored to prevent misuse.

● Unlocked offices and restricted areas – Valuable equipment, confidential information and personal belongings can become easy targets.

● Busy workplaces – Theft and other incidents can occur when people assume that someone else is monitoring the area.

Effective security isn't just about protecting a property overnight. A strong security strategy should provide protection throughout the day, adapting to changing risks and maintaining awareness at all times.

Many front-line security roles require a valid SIA licence. Officers must ensure their licence is appropriate for the work they are carrying out.
