I want to try something different today.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been talking a lot about The Hamster Wheel Trap®.
The idea is simple:
You build a business to create freedom.
But somewhere along the way, the business becomes increasingly dependent on you.
Until eventually…
You can’t get off the wheel because you’re the person keeping it turning.
But I’m interested in something.
Where does YOUR hamster wheel actually show up?
If I gave you the following choices, which ONE causes you the biggest problem?
A — DECISIONS
Too many decisions still end up with me.
B — PEOPLE
My team could take more ownership, but they still rely on me.
C — CUSTOMERS
Too many important customer relationships depend on me personally.
D — SALES
If I stop selling, revenue starts slowing down.
E — OPERATIONS
I’m still too involved in the day-to-day running of the business.
F — CONTROL
The uncomfortable one: I know I should let go of more… but I struggle to.
G — SOMETHING ELSE
Put A, B, C, D, E, F or G in the comments.
No explanation necessary unless you want to give one.
I’m genuinely interested to see where the biggest concentration is.
Because here’s something I’ve learned after more than two decades working with business owners:
Very few founders deliberately build a business that’s dependent on them.
It happens gradually.
And often the first step towards getting off the wheel is simply recognising where you’re still keeping it turning.
This is one of the central ideas behind Your Business Sucks.
But rather than me telling you what I think…
I want to hear from the people actually running businesses.
So…
👇 A, B, C, D, E, F or G?
And yes , you can choose more than one if things are particularly bad. 😂
