While on holiday, one of our team came across a sea access chair designed to help people with mobility challenges access the water with minimal assistance. It operates by two simple buttons: one ‘down’ and one ‘up’. There is also level access provided to the chair, enabling wheelchair access.
Yes, it raises operational and maintenance issues, but it strikes us how much difference such a bit of kit makes to the quality of life for someone with mobility issues, and how it minimises the manual handling risk for those assisting them.
We often talk about accessibility in terms of buildings, transport and workplaces, but access to leisure, recreation and the simple enjoyment of a day at the beach is just as important.
