Business leaders are always looking at ways to develop and improve their teams but at to what cost? UK employers spend around £42.0bn in training and team building each year, with an average spend of £1,530 per employee making it a costly investment.

Yet plenty of research into learning retention rates shows that people forget anywhere between 50-70% of what they learned....after just one day! In the days following their learning, the retention continues to steadily nosedive - something that is frequently called the 'forgetting curve'.

So, what can you do? Here’s the good news: There are some types of training and team building activities which leverage learning retention for your employees and make sure those development initiatives are actually worth it.

Using Virtual Reality, employees are able to experience workplace scenarios via the headset that would usually be too expensive, too dangerous, or impossible to recreate under normal circumstances.

VR provides a more memorable and active learning experience which has shown to improve memory and skill retention. In fact, one study has showed a 10-15% increase in test scores after implementing VR training for employees...now that must be music to the ears of employers who are looking for cost effective and efficient training methods!

When was the last time you enjoyed contributing to a team?

1/3 of value-added collaborations come from only 3% to 5% of employees (Adam Grant, Harvard Business Review 2016). 50% of meetings are considered unproductive and a waste of time. Sometimes all it takes is a pair of fresh eyes to bring innovation and new perspectives during hard times which is exactly what I feel I bring to a team or business when I work with them. Everyone has work activities that give them joy and energy and others that don’t. If they do the former most of the time, they love their work. But if they spend their time in the latter, work becomes frustrating and draining.

66% of US workers are not engaged or are actively disengaged at work (Jim Harter, Gallup, 2018) and 10% of team members agree about who is on their teams (120 teams) Why Teams Don't Work Harvard Business Review 2009.

Yet without the language to describe what energises you and what drains you, it’s hard to advocate for yourself or as a leader assign activities to the most appropriate members of your team. As a result, we lose out on the productivity gains that come when each person’s unique genius is harnessed.

The power in The Working Genius is that once you figure out your genius types, you can concisely describe what work activities give you energy and joy. Armed with this newfound knowledge you can do many things like:

🔶Review your job description. Highlight the duties you love in green, those you hate in red, and those you can stand in yellow.
🔶Compare your geniuses with those on your team. Consider opportunities to shift work within the team to maximise everyone’s enjoyment and productivity.

Trust and respect are the currency of winning company cultures. They fuel everyone on the team to generate exceptional results and promotes growth and sustainability, far more than any pay check can.

According to Harvard Business Review, 2015 75% of cross-functional teams are dysfunctional. To paraphrase Patrick Lencioni, best-selling author of 'The Five Dysfunctions of a Team', in order to create a effective and cohesive team, they must overcome the five dysfunctions highlighted in his model, and 'Trust' is the foundation required to do so.

A team without trust isn't really a team: it's just a group of individuals, working together. They may not share information, they might battle over responsibilities, and they may not cooperate with one another. It doesn't matter how capable or talented your people are, they may never reach their full potential if trust isn't present.
