One works and one doesn't.

In fact, the one that doesn't makes things much worse.

One gives practical results, and one causes huge problems while giving the illusion of control.

Could you do this to gain control?

A client came to us with a tough problem.

They loved their job but hated their boss.
They were pretty sure the boss felt the same way about them.

It had got to the point where they felt they had no choice but to leave.

They talked non-stop for almost 30 minutes about all the things their boss did and how wrong they were to behave like that.

It is very easy to focus on the behaviour of the other person and to forget what we are doing to contribute to the situation.
Especially when we are angry or fearful.

To regain control of any situation we need to use an important principle.

The more options or choices you can create, the more chances you have of finding a solution that works.

But under stress, our brains do the complete opposite.
We typically can only see one or two not very good options.

Within 2 weeks something miraculous happened to my client.
They reported back that they were getting on brilliantly and now went for coffee every day.

How?
It was simple.

We taught them to understand why they were reacting in that way to their boss.
This allowed them to choose to change how they communicated and behaved and so their boss responded differently too.

Real control is created when we take responsibility for creating options.

Leading on from yesterday's post (please scroll back if you missed it), we are visiting the second part of 'How to make yourself more valuable".

In this part, we focus on How To Think More Commercially / Entrepreneurially.

People get stuck in their career pathway because they are trained in a particular discipline eg, Finance, HR, Sales, Operations.

They often have a mindset that limits themself to that branch of knowledge.

Even though they would love to step up the next rung of the career ladder, they won't let themselves because of the belief they have in themselves and their abilities.

However, the truth is, it's actually about how you think rather than the knowledge you have.

We train people to think differently.

How to make yourself more valuable - Part 1.

The past 2 weeks we have concentrated a lot on getting rid of Imposter Syndrome (Scroll back if you have missed them).

This week we are going to be exploring how to make yourself more valuable.

There are actually two parts to this process, these are;

1. Becoming a High(er) Level Influencer.

2. Thinking More Commercially / Entrepreneurially.

In this post, we will concentrate on aspect 1.

What does it mean to be a higher level influencer and what are the steps you need to take you there?

Often, people only focus on the skill sets they have, thereby they limit themselves from having a more prominent position in business, but the ability to influence and have influence in your organisation are more to do with your thinking and not your skill set.

A thought for Friday...

If your kids or someone you love doubted themselves without reason, what would you say to them?

Would you agree with them?
Would you tell them they are right to doubt themselves and that they'll amount to nothing?

Of course not (I would hope).

But adults do this to themselves all the time.

We deal with people who undervalue themselves to a chronic level. From all professions and at all levels.

Clients, colleagues, maybe even your boss has told you that you are capable of achieving more in your career...
..but you're not convinced.

You have enough evidence that you are ready but you are choosing not to believe it and so you hold back from taking the next necessary step in your career.

This is a massive Sabotage Loop.

And it will present itself in many different ways;

● Underperforming and underachieving.
● Not promoting yourself or telling people how good you are at something.
● Under-niching by not going for the right level of client.
● Under-charging or not asking for your true value (employed of self-employed).
● General lack of true fulfillment.

So, my question is...how much external validation do you need to finally do something about it?

Why do some people have no problem expressing their value to others and some people do.

How do some confidently pitch and promote their services without worrying what people will think?

And others are so terrified, they will never promote themselves.
