About 30% of our work is taking over or resurrecting an older residential AV or IT system that is feeling poorly and the original installer has moved away or hung up their utility belt

These older smarthome systems can be very challenging but also very rewarding to work on when they are returned to full working order

However not everything is worth saving. The older the system the more likely that it will require an upgrade of some kind

After discussing with the client at some length the challenges they had been facing and making a general inspection of the system, we were able to deduce that the majority of the issues lay in the antiquated router

We agreed in advance with the client a cost for upgrade and a list of faults and bugs we would attempt to resolve in a given time period

We understand work like this should be fair to both parties. The client wants to avoid a big fat nasty surprise of a Bill but we also need to be paid a fair price for our time and expertise 😊

This is where years of experience and training pay dividends to everyone concerned

Part 3 of 3

It is relatively simple to house all your source equipment like the Amplifier (AVR), Sky receiver, ViginTV and Bluray in another room but how do you control it when most equipment relys on line of sight for infrared control?

Well, we have it covered with this smart remote from Control4

Control4 can communicate and control a host of hardware including lights, heating, hot water, cctv as well as the TV and audio systems in your home

The true power of a control4 system like this is the functionality. You press one button to turn multiple devices on at the same time

There is no need for multiple remotes 🤷

Reasons to centrally store your low voltage equipment in a rack:

- Becauseno dedicated furniture is required to house equipment in rooms the property is decluttered
- It's easier to service and find a fault
- It's easier to upgrade a component in the future
- The wiring is all hidden from view
- Fewer sockets and face plates required per room

A well installed rack ties down your equipment and cables which prevents faults occuring with loose cables

And the money you would have spent on furniture in each room to house all the equipment can help fund a centrally stored solution like this

Controlling the entertainment is easily done from a smartphone, on wall keypad or smart remote control

We just finished installing a big screen TV (LG 75" G6) and 5.2.2 Dolby Surround Sound with ATMOS sound system into this freshly renovated property

But what happened to the amplifier and sky receiver? 🤔

A good instalation starts with asking the client questions and showing them the oprions

Once the specification is agreed we can plan the installation and make choices that will enhance the final solution

Unfortunately the walls were not deep enough to support in wall speakers so we opted for there shallow surface mount cabinets from M&K

We've completed a preliminary configuration of the surround sound but once the client has properly moved back in and fill the space with rug, curtains and other furniture, we can tune in the accostics 😉

For now we're just making sure everything works

A practical example of Smart Lighting using LUTRON Ra2 for dimming and RITHUM for control

Both products can be retro fitted to most properties but for bigger projects you should consider LUTRONs more functional Ra3 lighting system

The LED RITHUM switch is versatile and controls alot more than just lighting. It fits a standard UK back box and comes in two versions. One mains powered and connecting to your systems via WiFi and the other connected and powered over CAT6

In this project the RITHUM switch also controls the ceiling speaks and underfloor heating
