New climate testing service for lenses.

We have just ordered an advanced climate chamber – allowing us to temperature test the lenses we supply to customers. This new climate chamber simulates extreme thermal changes enabling us to check optical performance, focus shift, and material durability. The chamber offers accurate program test cycles from -70°c up to 180°c. In conjunction with our inhouse vibration and shock testing equipment this allows us to further qualify our ruggedised lenses before shipment. This suite of testing services is available to give customers peace of mind that our supplied lenses will operate happily in the extreme environments they were designed for such as space, aircraft and military ground-based vehicles.

FAQ: Why do standard optical materials fail when subject to radiation?

A: When standard optical glass is subject to radiation it causes severe darkening (browning), resulting in almost total transmission loss. To stabilize optical glass against transmittance loss the composition is doped with cerium oxide (CeO₂). Cerium oxide acts as a stabilising agent, preventing the darkening. A lens produced from non-browning glass will continue to work until it has exceeded its accumulative dose of radiation. In the case of Resolve Optics radiation resistant lenses - they are rated for 100,000,000 rad - so depending on the level of radiation they are exposed to daily you could expect a lens to have a life of around 10 years.

Do all lens adapters produce the same result?

Lens adapters are a useful optical accessory to produce the desired field of view (FOV) or image format from a prime lens in a camera or sensor system. Unfortunately off-the-shelf lens adapters are generic in design to try to work with as many different lenses as possible and this consequently compromises image quality. By contrast, Resolve Optics specialist lens adapters are characterised by their ability to optimally change the field of view or image format of a specific lens, while maintaining high resolution, distortion-free images. An alternative material for IR imaging optics.

Historically the most common material utilised for IR imaging optics has been Germanium. The reasons for this are simple. Germanium is a unique material with exceptional optical properties arising from its high refractive index and excellent transparency in the LWIR (8-14um) spectral waveband. In recent years however, Germanium has become scarce and expensive primarily due to Chinese export restrictions, and fast-growing demand in both optical and electronics applications, stressing supply chains. Chalcogenides glasses are quickly becoming the alternative IR optical material of choice.
