We were asked to help a customer who had a stove fitted a few years ago by another company and it wasn’t producing any heat, no matter how much wood & coal they used on it.

Infact they had been struggling to keep warm 🥶 this winter which is not what you should experience after having a stove fitted correctly.

We like our customers to be warm & cosy here at A&L Parry, so we had to take a look at it & do something about it 🔥🔥.

At the survey it was clear that the opening which had been made for the stove was far too small, therefore any heat produced was being trapped in the recess and not radiating out into the room.

Plus the stove they had was not big enough for the room, so we chose an Irish made Henley stove to give the room some real heat & style.

We started work to rectify this by removing the original stove & liner, and carrying out works to make the recess bigger.

When our chimney engineer opened up we were shocked to find out exactly how bad the original installation was……..

1. The beam was fitted next the liner with no fire protection in between, so there evidence of charring / heat damage on the beam which was at high risk of combusting & setting on fire which would have caused major damage to the property or even worse consequences ⚠️‼️

2. There was plastic wrapping next to the liner, another fire hazard ⚠️ ‼️

3. There was no concrete lintel / structural support in the chimney just a void, so nothing was taking the weight of the chimney. The whole weight of the chimney was resting on the edges of the cosmetic beam!! ⚠️‼️
There was evidence of minor cracks in the chimney breast wall, demonstrating that the chimney was suffering structurally.
Luckily we got there in time to rectify this before any major structural damage was caused.

4. The CO2 alarm was faulty & not working correctly ⚠️‼️

5. The fireplace recess had been lined with plasterboard not fireboard, another significant fire hazard ⚠️ ‼️

We were able to rectify all the above issues and fit a new Henleys Willow 6.7 kw Multifuel stove and liner, making this installation completely safe and leaving our customers a lot warmer 🪵🔥🪵.

Our customers can’t believe how much more of the fire 🔥 they can see with the Henley Willow stove compared with their previous stoves where they struggled to see any.

The Willow really is an impressive design that looks amazing and is a real feature in any room.

All our work is carried out to currrent building regulation standards and comes with either HETAS or NICEIC certification.

We have left the customers toasty warm and very happy indeed.

If you have a stove which isn’t producing any heat, smoking in the room, not working as it should or if you just want us to check your stove installation out, please give us a ring on 01244 660917 and we will send our senior engineer out to have a look at it for you 👍🤩.

What is Flaunching & how do I know if mine needs replacing?

…….Flaunching is the bed of mortar around the top of a chimney stack that secures the chimney pots in place & if shaped correctly will direct rainwater away from the chimney in order to prevent damp problems from occurring in the flue.

As the top of a chimney stack is constantly exposed to the elements, damage or small cracks in the Flaunching can occur over time and can cause damp issues in your chimney.

So if you have damp patches & mould on the walls of your chimney breast, this could be the problem.

Having damaged or not the correct chimney pots or cowls in place can also cause issues.

You might also notice your chimney pot leaning or looking unstable, this is also a sign that the Flaunching needs replacing.

We are quite proud of our Flaunching here at A&L Parry LTD so just wanted to share some pictures with you of the jobs we’ve done.

We are getting a lot of calls about this at the moment due to the wet weather.

PLEASE NOTE we don’t carry out this type of work during the autumn & winter months, we only do it in the spring & summer when there is no chance of frost 🥶❄️☃️damaging the mortar.

So please only give us a call in the spring / summer months for this type of work 👍

On this job the previous installers had fitted the roof flashing kit incorrectly, applied silicone and mortar around it which had failed and caused rainwater to enter the property - See attached picture.

Thankfully we were able to resolve this and make it watertight for the customer, and deal with all the other safety issues to make sure they were safe and warm this winter

Another great review from this customer this week.

We fitted a new twin wall system internally through the house for them and rectified all the issues with their previous poor installation.

"Just to say how happy we are with the work carried out this week to replace our flue and repair the leak over our wood burning stove. Laurence and Sean were careful with our property, very professional, and worked quickly to make the roof watertight. We felt they went above and beyond for us, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. A Big Thank-you from us both"

A bit of a different job location for us last week, which definitely came with its own unique challenges.

We were contacted last year by the owner of an old Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Cottage on the side of a hill in the Llangollen Valley which had been in the family for generations and desperately needed repairs to the chimney stack and the flue.

The property has an old cast iron range cooker which provides all the heat in the property, the chimney required lining because smoke was leaking in the upstairs bedroom and there was water coming down into the bedroom when it rained.

When we first visited the property in January to carry out a camera survey on the chimney you can image our surprise when we had to leave our Van and were taken on a quad bike by a local farmer 1.5 miles up the side of a steep hill, with no road access, across fields and a stream to get to it.

We obviously had to wait until summer to carry out the works due to remote location and are pleased to say that due to the good weather 😎☀️, some Thermocrete and a fair bit of hard graft we were able to repair the top of the chimney stack and restore the chimney to full working order last week.

Video to follow in another post.

The property has no water supply apart from a natural spring, so massive thanks to a local
Farmer for allowing us access across his land and for the providing us with water bowsers and use of his trailer.

We used our own Kawasaki 4x4 UTV Mule farm vehicle to get our materials / tools to & from the site. It’s safe to say that without this we would have not been able to do the job.

Huge thanks also to Craig and his team at CC Scaffolding for getting the scaffolding up for us, they faced the same challenges as us getting everything they needed up there, but Craig was happy to help us out and do the job.

For all your scaffolding needs please contact Craig on 07792 006361.

It’s satisfying to know that we have been able to help keep this lovely traditional Welsh Cottage and its owners warm & dry for a few more years to come 🔥🪵🔥.

If you have an unusual fireplace or chimney related problem that you need help with, give us a call and hopefully we can help you. We all like a challenge here at A&L Parry LTD 🤩😁🤩.
