Access by Audit

Access by Audit Thank you very much for visiting us today. We are here to help you. Not all website accessibility audits are equal!

You are probably here because you are looking for a company that can undertake an Accessibility Audit of your website. One of the reasons that there is a lot of information on this website is to help you understand a little more about the process. There is an important difference between automated metrics and manual testing. Both have an important role to play and are both necessary. With the cor

rect software and a little knowledge, it is possible for anyone to run their websites through some automated checkers and we have, sadly, heard of companies charging in excess of £2,000 to do just that. Unfortunately, even if your website passes some or all of these automated matrices, it may still be inaccessible for some visitors to your website. This is why manual checking by an accessibility expert is so important. The Equality Act

The biggest concern that most businesses and particularly public bodies have, is whether they are legally compliant or not. The natural instinct is to go to the UK Government Website and follow their guidance. Their guidance is very helpful in some respects but it is concerned with ensuring that publicly-funded websites achieve a fairly narrow level of compliance that the UK Government deems to be acceptable. Unfortunately, it is quite possible to comply with this legislation and still have an inaccessible website. If you have a website, whether you are a private company, a charity or a publicly-funded body, it falls under the Equality Act. This is why having a professional accessibility audit and a professionally written Accessibility Statement is so important. The Accessibility Statement will inform visitors to your website what they can expect whilst at the same time giving you complete protection from litigation. We are here to help you and to protect you, no matter how accessible or inaccessible your website currently is. We have a proven track record lasting over 15 years

We have been building accessible websites since 2006 and have knowledge that we wish to share as we strive to fulfill our mission:

To change the world, one website at a time.

Sign my petition to rid the world of Cookie Banners and make the Web a happier place! Cookie Banners are very challenging for disabled people and annoying for everyone else. Let us get rid of them!

Amend The Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, removing the need for Explicit Consent regarding the use of non-essential cookies. This would remove the need for Cookie Banners, which we believe discriminate against visually impaired people.

Would you wait 2 minutes and 48 seconds before you could read the home page of a website? This is what the Information Commissioner's Office (unintentionally I am sure) forces visually impaired people to do, in a clear breach of the Equality Act.

I am going to be a TedX Speaker!

I am so excited to announce that I am going to be speaking at TedX Lukely Brook on Wednesday March 2nd 2022! You may be unsurprised that learn that I am speaking about a subject closest to my heart: Website Accessibility for Disabled People!

I have spent 15 years talking about this; at meetings, events, media interviews and through rather a lot of online articles. I will always continue to do this, of course, however, I do feel extremely honoured to be invited to present in the TedX format.

The overall theme for the event is “If not now, when?” and never has then been more applicable to website accessibility than now.

As with other TedX events, it will be presented to a live audience and simultaneously live-streamed and be available on https://zcu.io/iVpC afterwards.

In case you are wondering why “If not now, when?” is particularly appropriate for this subject, well, detailed guidelines on how to make your website have been around since 1999. We are now in 2021 and yet most people have never even heard of the idea of a website being accessible or otherwise for a disabled person!

My lifelong wish is to Change the World – One Website at a Time. Perhaps the TedX platform will enable me to change one or two more.

A motivational call to action, to prompt those attending and ‘touched’ by this TEDx event to take immediate action, on aspects of their business and personal life that they inevitably know they will have to undertake at some time, but so often delay or procrastinate upon.

If your website is public, it falls under the Equality Act. If it is inaccessible to disabled people, they cannot buy from you, which is bad. They could also sue you under the Equality Act., which could be really bad.

Website Accessibility is something that affects everyone. If you publicly funded in any way, there is legislation that you need to comply with. If you are a business or other organisation, the Equality Act applies to you! The level of ignorance in this area is staggering and, I am afraid, applies to...

The thing about film critics
How many film critics are there who have actually made a movie?
What about music critics? How many are actually musicians?
What about book reviewers? How many of them have actually written a novel?
What about restaurant critics? How many of them have run a restaurant?
The list goes on and on!

So, what is my point?

OK, it is this.

Unless you are an expert in accessible website design, having gone through the blood, sweat and tears involved in creating a website that meets the needs of everyone, regardless of ability or disability, how can you perform an accessibility audit of another website?

Unfortunately, this is what is happening today. Self-proclaimed experts are running automated reports of little value, charging inflated fees into the bargain. Accessibility statements are being written with no knowledge of accessible web design, leaving the website owners open to litigation.

When you need to get an accessibility audit of your website and are wondering who to approach, the first question to ask is this: does this person have a proven track record in building accessible websites?

It is not about what you say, it is about what you have done that gives you legitimacy.
