Original Gilding is owned by Clare Lewis, who is a highly skilled artisan and accomplished artist with over 25 years of gilding experience. For many years she ran an Antiques business specialising in gilt mirrors & furniture. Clare spent several years working for one of London’s leading restoration companies. Trained in gilding at the City & Guilds College, Kennington with Judy Wetherall, a leadin
g practitioner, lecturer and conservator using traditional methods dating back to Cennini’s “Il Libro dell’ Arte”. Further studies of finishes and decorative techniques with Robert Cunning at The Camden Institute. Clare is a visual artist and Fine Art BA graduate of the Chelsea College of Art. She gilds using the traditional methods of oil and water gilding using precious metal leafs: varieties of gold, silver, copper along with various other decorative metallic finishes. Based in Chichester West Sussex and London she covers any area in the M3 corridor, home counties and West and East Sussex. You can bring smaller pieces to the workshop or if the item is large I am happy to come and work on site. Email me if you would like an indication of the cost. In addition I gild contemporary projects: walls, ceilings, furniture and decorative items. I can transform one surface to a different decorative surface. I can gild almost all surfaces apart from jewellery. Finally I restore painted surfaces, sculptures in wood, stone, ceramic and mosaics.
