Pre-pandemic levels of HCAIs like MSSA, MRSA, E-Coli were estimated to have cost the NHS £2.7 billion and to be responsible for a total of 7.1 million occupied hospital bed days and 79700 days of absenteeism among front-line HCPs across all NHS hospitals in England.
Improved hand hygiene compliance will reduce the incidence of HCAIs, which results in significant cost savings for healthcare organisations.
Here are 6 tips to Increase your compliance.
1. Provide regular education and training sessions for healthcare professionals (HCPs) on the importance of hand hygiene and the proper technique for hand washing and sanitising. Ensure that all staff, including new employees, receive this training.
2. Make sure that hand hygiene product such as hand sanitisers, Orbel®, soaps, and paper towels are readily available in all patient care areas. Place them in visible and easily accessible locations, such as at the entrance of patient rooms and corridors.
3. Encourage positive reinforcement by recognising and rewarding staff who consistently practice good hand hygiene. This can be done through a rewards program or simply acknowledging and thanking staff for their efforts.
4. Regularly monitor and provide feedback to staff on their hand hygiene compliance rates. This can be done through direct observation or by using electronic monitoring systems. Provide regular reports to staff and management to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
5. Managers and senior staff should lead by example and consistently practice good hand hygiene. This sets a positive example for other staff members to follow and creates a culture of accountability and responsibility for hand hygiene.
6. Use Orbel® and take your hand hygiene mobile!
