Are emoji emotional?

We often use emoji to express emotion or tone in online communication but do we actually process them emotionally, the same way we do with facial emotions?

The CyberDoctor Director, Professor Linda Kaye and Team Emoji have been doing research over many years to study this phenomenon. They are finding that although we often use emotional labels to interpret emoji, we don't seem to actually process them emotionally on an unconscious level.

Meet The CyberDoctor Director, Professor Linda Kaye. She is a Professor of Cyberpsychology who has nearly 20 years experience as a psychology researcher and educator. It's ! Although we often think of emoji as playful icons in online communication, the study of emoji can be useful for understanding:

- If they are valid as a way to measure sentiment
- How they relate to misinterpretation in online communication
-How they might help us express identity
- If they are actually emotional

We have been collecting sensory data associated with how we perceive emoji. The visual below illustrates the strength of people's perceptions of the world emoji via different sensory modalities 🤔

Our Director, Professor Linda Kaye is now a Certified Emergenetics Associate, having successfully completing her Associate training with Emergenetics UK & Ireland.

The Emergenetics Certification provides a framework to apply the models and principles from Emergenetics to be able to deliver workshops with organisations to help them with anything from improving team dynamics, leadership development, team collaboration, and navigating change.

Emergenetics will be an excellent complement to the existing CPD training The CyberDoctor can deliver which applies principles from (cyber)psychology to practical challenges such as optimising communication, creating user-centred digital marketing and supporting people-centred digital transformation.

Team Emoji was let out in the wild today to try our our shiny new Emoji Deck for the first time with the wonderful people of U3A Aughton ❤️

Emoji Deck is a resource which facilitates conversations on how we interpret different emoji. We used it today to understand generational gaps in online communication.
