A recent tribunal has ruled in favour of a gymnastics coach who was unfairly dismissed after requesting a written contract and payslip, to which she had a statutory right. After discovering her start date was incorrect and that she had been underpaid, she raised these concerns with her managing director and was told there was “no need to worry”. She was later dismissed for alleged misconduct, but the judge ruled that she was let go for raising concerns over her payslips. This case highlights the importance of having proper employee contracts. Don't leave yourself open to similar situations. If you need help with your employee contracts, speak to 3 Stripes HR.

Do you need help with your long-term sick?

The February 2024 Labour Market Overview, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), shows that those inactive because they were long-term sick remain at historically high levels.
The latest figures, available on the ONS website, reveal that the UK claimant count for January 2024 increased by 14,100 on the month and by 61,200 on the year to 1.579 million.

Responding to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), Deputy Director of Public Policy, Jane Gratton, said that the large number of inactive workers was concerning.
“Unless we get more people back into the workplace then the risk of higher inflation and interest rates will persist for longer,” she warned.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) also chose to focus on the high numbers of people inactive due to long-term sick, highlighting that businesses are struggling to secure candidates, even while vacancies continue to fall.

Addressing the UK’s ill health must be a key priority for the Government, Senior Labour Market Economist, Jon Boys, argued.
“It’s imperative to prioritise occupational health services, to prevent individuals from exiting the workforce prematurely,” he went on. “Additionally, employers should be aware of the impact that stress in the workplace can have on people’s health and take steps to address this.”

It's time now to get a grip of your long-term and short-term sickness. Contact [email protected] for a free consultation.

While Britain now has one of the highest wage floors in the world, it remains well behind other countries on wider minimum standards, with, minimum wage workers receiving only a 10th of their normal earnings if they fall sick for a week. This is one of the findings of the independent think tank the Resolution Foundation, which has said that raising minimum standards alongside the minimum wage should be the focus of a “good work” strategy for the decade ahead.
In order to raise minimum standards as well as the minimum wage, the Foundation’s proposals include:

• A higher wage floor: continuing the current pace of NLW rises in the next Parliament would see it reach 73% of typical earnings, or £13.12 on current forecasts, by the end of this decade
• Proper sick pay: an earnings replacement approach, where SSP is paid at 65% (matching typical OECD rates) of a worker’s usual earnings
• More certainty and control: new rights to a contract reflecting the hours a worker usually works, at least two weeks’ advance notice of shifts and compensation for late changes.

Is your company prepared for these possible changes that the Foundation as proposed? IF not then its probably a good time to look at your HR policies and procedures. Contact me for a free HR health check and guidance at [email protected].

PTSD

According to research by PTSDUK, 1 in 2 people in the UK will have experienced a traumatic experience in their life. Of those, 20% will go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). That means 1 in 10 of us will experience PTSD, so there’s a high chance that someone in your organisation is either experiencing it, or has experienced it in the past. As leaders or people managers, it’s vital that you understand what PTSD is, and learn how to support these employees or colleagues.

Due to the heightened emotions and loss of trust that often accompany PTSD, it can be exhausting to be around someone who is experiencing it – particularly if you don’t understand what’s going on. Individuals experiencing PTSD frequently find it difficult to engage with their work – and can find previously manageable tasks overwhelming. This may be caused by various PTSD symptoms, including memory problems, difficulty concentrating, tiredness due to poor sleep and difficult relationships with co-workers.
You should work with the individual employee to find and coordinate the best support system for them. Once that is done, you will need to regularly check in with and provide ongoing support to that individual. To help with this, here are five ways that you can support an employee who is experiencing PTSD:

Educate yourself and your team
B Make workplace adjustments
Build trust with the employee
Promote open conversation around mental health
Encourage the employee to seek help

Has your company got the correct strategies in place to help those suffering from PTSD. For further information on how a company can facilitate this contact [email protected].
