Should you apply for that grant? Can you win that contract?

Knowing when to go for an opportunity — and when to walk away — is one of the most valuable skills a social enterprise leader can have. Not every grant is worth pursuing. Not every contract is right for your organisation. The bid/no-bid question matters more than most people realise.

On 1 October we're running a free online workshop for social enterprises and CICs across Cumbria, covering grants, tenders and trading income — and how to decide which routes are genuinely worth your time.

Your facilitators are Jenny Brumby and Cath Clarke, both of Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership. Between them they bring decades of experience supporting social enterprises, CICs and community organisations to build more sustainable income — from grants and direct funding to contracts, tenders and trading.

Why "just get online" isn't the best advice for some of us.

Government departments, the NHS, banks and utility providers have over the past 10 years moved more and more of their services online.

For someone confident with a laptop, this is not a problem. For someone who has never used a mouse, doesn't know how to send an email, or doesn't have anyone to rely on for help, it can mean falling further behind. Like missing appointments, struggling to claim what they're entitled to, or relying entirely on family members to act on their behalf.

This isn't just an inconvenience. It's widening the gap between people who can access support and those who can't.

Phoenix Advice & Guidance now offer 'individual' One-to-One computer (digital) learning in a calm and safe space. So, please share this message with anyone this could benefit.
