Family Business Practice

Family Business Practice The Family Business Practice is the brainchild of Peter Roper, the Family Business Man.

Family Business Practice a membership organisation that provide a variety of online events ranging from masterclasses by industry experts to practical workshops. He wanted to build a network of owner-managed and family businesses who understand that family businesses are different. In doing so, he wanted to help some of the 3 million family businesses in the UK to feel more valued and be more cel

ebrated than they sometimes are. Today, the Practice has over 60 members ranging from husband-and-wife consultancies to businesses employing over 200 people. The one thing they all have in common is that they are all family businesses and they think, act and do differently to their corporate equivalents. It’s also growing rapidly, thanks to both word of mouth of happy members but also our active marketing strategy. You can find out more about how we promote the Family Business Practice here.

I mentioned last week that as a family we were very proud to see our daughter Sara Beth Reynolds awarded the Beverly Babb Award for Extraordinary Service by the Global Speakers Association (GSF).

We have seen lots or praise on social media, and it has been wonderful.

I also mentioned that we have lots to tell you and here is the second piece of news.

At that same Professional Speaking Association annual conference, directly after Sara Beth’s award I was completely surprised to be the recipient of the PSA Founders Award. I am only the sixth recipient in the past twenty-five years history of the association, and it was both a complete surprise and most humbling.

The award is for outstanding service to the Association and its members and in my acceptance speech (thinking on my feet!) I told a story of how I became involved in the association. The bottom line was, and is, that I chose to stick around the PSA and the benefits to my business and myself have been numerous...
..Stick around and serve to the best of my ability.

In business I believe the number one thing you must have is stickability.

I noted a post online this morning from a well-known individual had received tremendous attention. Essentially the individual in their own word’s had ‘come clean’ about their very challenging twelve months due to lack of business. I wasn’t surprised at the enormous number of posts from others all saying two things:

Stick at it because they are great at what they do!

Most well-wishers are having a poor year too!

I can tell you the same vibe was at the PSA convention.

Many businesses are currently finding trading conditions to be very tough. Without being too political, until we have a government that wakes up and realises it needs to talk things up not down it will remain challenging.

I am humbled ann thankful for the award, for my family and those close to us and of course to our many clients in these times and I know the one thing we need to do is just keep going!

Have Stickability…

And I hope you have it too!

Until the next time.

There are many parts to a Reputation, can you keep your eyes on all of them?

As I write this many things are going on in the world. The news feeds are full of bad news, in fact as much as we can handle, I guess right now.

Unfortunately, they seem hard-wired to look in the main at negativity, with the occasional feel-good article to justify their existence, at least that is how it seems.

Don’t get me wrong there are some very good well-meaning individuals inside the press however unfortunately, they swim against a torrent of easy pickings when it comes to bad news…

The proof of this is I have looked at the mainstream press today and equivalent social media fields and frankly, by the end of it, I needed a stiff drink.

– ok maybe not but you get my point.

What's the point, Peter?

As a business, you must tread very carefully these days. One bad bit of press and you can be toast. Just look at the mess Bud Light has made and more recently Wickes for instance. They are called Ratner moments...

Whether we like it or not in business we can’t hide from this fact so better to be clear about what your reputation should be in your own eyes. Then plan how to make it stick in the eyes of most of your clients and potential prospects etc.

We have devised a programme that has nine key areas (there are more!) that enable you to understand your strengths and weaknesses within your business reputation and devise a plan accordingly.

One of our Family Business Practice members was kind enough to send this testimonial on the subject recently…

"As a business, we have been spending a lot of time focussing on three things; i) who we are, ii) the customers that we serve, iii) improving the quality of referrals that we get into the business. We have worked with Peter over the last two months delving deeper into what our core values are and thus the values needed from the businesses that we want to be working with.

Sometimes, it takes a conversation to step back and realise that people buy from people and unless we share core similarities then any relationship will never truly stand the test of time nor have quality to it.

Peter helped us establish this position from the outset and thereafter we spent a lot of time discussing how we create a reputation (not by what you do but by what you have done!!) and defining what a quality referral looks like.

To date, we have seen Gross Profit increase by over 10% year-on-year via the new approach we are taking. I would highly recommend working with Peter as a person and as a businessman."
