Despite having been discovered over 3 years ago, today (Tuesday 8th April 2014) marked the day that a vulnerability was found in code that protects a massive amount of websites around the world, from financial institutions, to email providers, and stuck fear into the hearts of both consumers and technicians alike.

The so-called HeartBleed vulnerability, found in the openssl library, is so threatening to the security of your personal data on the internet, because using very basic techniques, a hacker can read small segments of a severs memory and pull out whatever was in the memory at that time - needless to say that can (and does) contain your usernames, passwords and other private information.

The vulnerability has already been used on one site to steal tens of thousands of pounds of the virtual currency Bitcoin from users, and hackers across Twitter are claiming success in stealing the private keys (giving them back-door access) to thousands more sites.

The majority of the burden lies with the people whose job it is to run these services - a fix has been announced by the developers of openssl and many sites that were vulnerable early on Tuesday have since been patched.

If you run a website that uses SSL, in particular openssl, ensure you are up to date, restart all your services, and best-practice dictates you should regenerate your SSL certificates to ensure they are not compromised (remember: this hack can reveal your SSL private key to a hacker!!)

For everybody else, "check before you travel" - the following site will tell you if a website you need to log in to is susceptible to the HeartBleed vulnerability;
