“What is Julia’s Print Clinic—and what’s the point?”
Fair question.
We regularly receive artwork that looks good on screen but needs changes before it can go to print.
There has always been an element of this in print production. But as turnaround times get tighter, correcting files can become a bottleneck. It also creates artwork costs that nobody has budgeted for—and nobody particularly wants to pay.
We also see talented designers, including recent graduates, producing excellent creative work without always having been taught how to prepare it for print. Designing for a screen and preparing a file for a physical product involve different checks.
Tools like Canva have opened design up to many more people. You can create something that looks great, but choosing a “print-ready” export doesn’t automatically make it suitable for every product, size or finishing process.
Then there’s AI-generated artwork, which understandably divides opinion.
Our view? It can open up creative possibilities for people and small businesses who previously couldn’t afford them. Surely a local chip shop having a well-designed promotional poster is better than relying on a paper bag and a message written in Sharpie?
The opportunity is welcome. The artwork still needs to work in print.
That’s why we created Julia’s Print Clinic, inspired by our own Julia in customer service.
It shares practical advice to help people understand what to check, why it matters and how to avoid common artwork problems before they hold up a job.
Whether you’re a self-taught designer, a Canva user, experimenting with AI or helping a new colleague learn the ropes, we hope it makes preparing artwork a little easier.
