The RSPB has just given the green light — feeders can go back up from 1st November, ready to see our garden birds through the colder months. Natural food's already thin on the ground after this summer's heat, so it's the perfect excuse to bring a little French flair to the feeding station.

🌳 TREE OF THE WEEK 🌳

Every Tuesday, our resident tree expert Don picks out one tree he thinks deserves your attention — and this week he's gone for something genuinely unexpected.

This week's pick: Crataegus pinnatifida — the Chinese Hawthorn.

"Most people walk straight past this one," says Don. "And then I tell them about the tanghulu and suddenly everyone wants one."

And what a story it is.

You know those gorgeous glossy red sweets on skewers that have been doing the rounds on social media — dipped in hardened sugar, called tanghulu? That's this tree's fruit. And the dried shan zha you'll find in Chinese cooking and traditional medicine as a digestive aid? Also this tree.

A hawthorn with a life well beyond the hedgerow.

In the garden it makes a beautiful small deciduous tree — largely thornless, with striking deeply cut leaves that read more like a maple than anything you'd expect from a hawthorn. White flower clusters in late May, then large, bright red haws hanging heavy on the branch through autumn. Genuinely spectacular.

"It's a tree that carries a story most of the neighbours' trees simply don't," says Don. "And that, for me, is exactly what makes it worth growing."

We know. It's not even October. But this one genuinely can't wait, and here's why.

An inscribed garden bench, a name, a date, a few carefully chosen words, is one of those rare gifts that doesn't get forgotten by February.
