Over 1 million young people in the UK are not in education, employment or training.

A “lost generation” is how this is now being described, with warnings that without urgent action, things could get worse.

Too many young people aren’t getting the chance to build confidence, gain experience and take that first step into the workplace.

At CforLP, we know this can be changed and programmes like Dream Placement are part of the solution.

Dream Placement is a six-month leadership and career development journey connecting ambitious 16–18-year-olds with employers across Cumbria, where every young person who applies is supported to build confidence, skills and real-world experience — not just those who go on to secure a placement.

But this only works if businesses step forward and open your doors to a week‑long leadership placement.

Help fund a six‑month Dream Placement programme that supports every single applicant to take that next step.

This is how we prevent a lost generation.

A review says the number of 16 to 24-year-olds not in employment, education or training has increased to more than a million, and will keep rising without "urgent" action.

These are just a few of the reasons our business mentors get involved across our programmes.

Our leadership work, from primary through to early careers, relies on people from local businesses stepping forward. That might mean sharing your career story, supporting a project, or mentoring someone as they figure out what’s next.

Mentors get a lot from it too, building confidence in their own leadership, seeing things from a different perspective, and feeling more connected to the community they’re part of.

We recently delivered a ProjX Arts programme in partnership with Cumbria Arts & Culture Network as part of their project, showcasing the arts and culture sector to young people across Cumbria.

Working alongside CACN and a range of creative partners, we created something that goes beyond traditional work experience, with young people developing ideas that could shape future activity in the sector.

This is a great example of partnership in action, bringing different organisations together to create something meaningful, with real impact for young people and value for everyone involved.

We’re continuing to build more of these partnerships, where organisations benefit from our leadership opportunities and skills, while helping us to drive long-term sustainability through our shared mission.

What if starting a business wasn’t just about profit…
but also about making a positive difference?

That’s what a social enterprise is.

Something that works as a business,
but also creates real impact in the community around it.

If you’ve been thinking about starting something like this,
there’s an opportunity coming up in Cleator Moor that could be a good place to explore it.

We’re running a free enterprise programme designed to help you take an idea and see where it could go.

It’s a mix of practical workshops, support from people who’ve been there,
and time to talk through your idea and test it properly.

There’s also additional support along the way,
including up to 3 months’ free office space for new enterprises.

This is how young people across Cumbria are leading real change in our communities.

Real projects that respond to what’s actually needed locally, often linked to sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

From primary school through to early careers, we see young people building the confidence to take something from

“we’d like to see this change or make a positive impact”
to
“here’s our plan, let’s make it happen.”

That’s where leadership starts to show up.

Across our programmes, young people are supported by schools and local business mentors who help shape their thinking, challenge ideas, and bring in real‑world perspective.

That support, alongside real opportunities to take ownership, is what enables them to turn ideas into something that actually makes a difference in their communities.

What does “sustainability” mean to a young person?

We asked this to young people before starting our Leading Change programme.

Some spoke about future generations, protecting resources, and looking after the planet.

And quite a few just said they weren’t sure at all.

Across Leading Change, and our wider work from primary right through to early careers, we see young people move from

“I’ve heard of sustainability but not too sure what it is...”
to
“this is what it means, and this is what we can, and will do about it.”

How would you explain sustainability to a young person?

New people managers need space to learn, not just responsibility.

For many first‑time managers, leading people is learned alongside the job.

It’s practical, human, and rarely straightforward.

At CforLP, our programmes support leadership at every stage of life, from early education through work, leadership and beyond. The First Line Manager (FLM) programme sits within that pathway, focusing on the moment where people first step into leading others.

FLM gives new managers the space to step away from day‑to‑day pressures and learn alongside peers from different organisations across Cumbria.

It’s built around real challenges, honest conversation and shared learning.

What’s learned isn’t theoretical. It’s taken straight back into teams, workplaces and communities.

The impact isn’t just on the individual manager.

Organisations gain more confident people leaders.

Workplaces benefit from reflection, perspective and better decision‑making.
Leadership becomes something that’s learned together, not in isolation.

If you’re supporting new managers in your organisation, we’re always happy to talk through whether FLM could play a helpful role within your wider people development approach.
